IBM Research Strategic Consultant Intern: 2025 in Yorktown Heights, New York

Introduction

IBM is seeking a Strategic Consultant Intern to join the Research organization's Strategic Business Initiatives (SBI) team.

The SBI team's mission is to influence IBM Research's strategy and advance new innovations by providing forward-looking, fact-based analyses of emerging technological horizons, industry pain points, and business opportunities. It is responsible for accelerating IBM Research's impact to IBM and our clients by creating new markets / products and evaluating enhancements to existing products / services. The team works in critical emerging areas to identify key technologies, develop, and articulate the associated use cases and business value, and drive deep engagements with Research and Business Unit colleagues to prepare offerings for eventual hand-off to the appropriate IBM brand teams.

Your Role and Responsibilities

This is for a 2025 summer internship with the following start dates: May - August or June - September for quarter system schools.

You will be responsible for supporting business and strategic projects for key IBM Research and Corporate initiatives. Examples of high-exposure strategic projects include IBM's Global Technology Outlook (GTO) and the annual Research Strategy Planning process.

You will gain experience working on technology and business consulting projects, and learn about new and emerging innovations and business models. You will get a chance to learn new technical topics and perform fact-based quantitative analysis, hypothesis-driven research, data gathering, and market research as part of the creation of implementable strategic recommendations and deliverables.

Candidates must be able to work in a dynamic and high-profile environment while working closely with researchers and senior stakeholders from Research and IBM brands. Strong analytical skills, the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, and a high degree of coachability are essential.

Candidates must be in their third year of a four-year business or technical focused undergraduate program to apply, or equivalent position in a program of study. Candidates must be willing to work in Yorktown Heights, NY for the internship to benefit from IBM's internship programming.

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Experience addressing business problems through understanding of current business processes and data manipulation, including data mining and data cleansing methods.

  • Experience analyzing large amounts of data utilizing their understanding of key external and internal data sources to evaluate the benefit of a solution to the business and provide business value.

  • Experience applying agile practices and business acumen to achieve improved business outcomes and to effectively interact with a client (internal or external).

Location StatementSupplemental 1 employees may be eligible for up to 8 paid holidays, minimum of 56 hours paid sick time and the IBM Employee Stock Purchase Plan. IBM offers paid family medical leave and disability benefits to eligible employees where required by applicable law. The compensation range and benefits for this position are based on a full-time schedule for a full calendar year. The salary will vary depending on your job-related skills, experience and location. Pay increment and frequency of pay will be in accordance with employment classification and applicable laws. For part time roles, your compensation and benefits will be adjusted to reflect your hours. Benefits may be pro-rated for those who start working during the calendar year.
