About the Indiana Veterans' Home:

The Indiana Veterans' Home is located in West Lafayette, Indiana. Originally created to care for veterans of the Civil War, the Indiana Veterans’ Home welcomed its first resident in 1896. Located on 250+ acres in West Lafayette, IVH is a full-service care facility offering a complete array of services for residents.

The mission of the Indiana Veterans' Home is to honor Indiana's veterans and their spouses by providing the highest level of care in a therapeutic home-like environment, enhancing health and yielding optimal quality of life. To do this and meet the unique needs of these heroes and their families, we deliver compassionate and comprehensive skilled care while integrating arts and cultural programming and preserving the rich history of the Home.

Role Overview: The Activities Director manages the department to provide ongoing activities designed to meet, in accordance with nursing assessments, interests for the physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being of each resident. Works with Asst. Director of Recreations to manage department staff. Works with the Volunteer Coordinator to manage and schedule Volunteer staff. Candidate must be certified as an activities professional or be able to obtain certification by a specified time.

Salary Statement:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $42,900.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Coordinate the planning, organizing, developing, and execution of all facility recreational activities including sports, crafts, or other related activities for the residents.

  • Work closely with education, therapy, and volunteers to ensure that recreation programs run in accordance with agency policies and procedures.

  • Teach subordinate staff new recreational activities as needed.

  • Ensure that the safety and security of the facility is maintained during recreational activities.

  • Assist with the creation of a budget for the recreation department.

  • Maintain accurate records for the recreation area.

  • Supervise the entire recreation staff, clarifying and interpreting all recreational procedures and resolving disputed issues involving recreational programming.

  • Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.

  • Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) required.

  • Three (3) years of full-time experience in arts and crafts, physical education, recreation, or related experience.

  • Extensive knowledge of recreational activities including sports, arts, and crafts, music, and hobbies.

  • Working knowledge of community-based programs, agencies and governmental entities that have relevance to recreation program areas and goals.

  • Ability to maintain recreational equipment, tools, and supplies.

  • Ability to engage offenders in recreational activities at multiple levels.

  • Basic knowledge of rules and laws that apply to specific sports and/or the ability to research those rules or laws.

  • Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.

  • Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role provides supervision for incarcerated individuals and requires a high level of judgment and care.
