T he Texas A&M University Cyc l o t r on Institute, a Department of Energy University Facility, is jointly supported by DOE and the State of Texas and is a major technical and educational resource for the state and the nation. At the Institute, we focus on conducting basic research, educating students in accelerator-based science and technology, and providing technical capabilities for a wide variety of applications in space science, materials science, analytical procedures and nuclear medicine. The Radiation Effects Facility Operator I will work collaboratively with Cyclotron staff to deliver beams to Radiation Effects Facility (REF) customers, maintaining a safe and professional environment. What You Need to Know
Salary: Compensation will be commensurate based on the selected hire's education and experience.
Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of safety protocols for working with high-energy particle beams
Ability to communicate complex concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
Ability to work nights, weekends, rotating 12-hour shifts
Preferred Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Accelerator Physics, Nuclear Physics, Nuclear Chemistry or Nuclear Engineering
Experience working in a nuclear physics laboratory or similar
Operation of ion sources, cyclotrons accelerators, beam line elements and control systems
Ability to work evenings, nights, weekends and holidays
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
Working knowledge of software programs used for nuclear physics research
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge behind accelerator design, beam dynamics, beam diagnostics, and beam transport principles
Ability to interpret data from instruments to assess beam quality and performance
Basic electrical and mechanical aptitude
Basic knowledge of electrical test equipment
Responsibilities:
Operates ion sources, cyclotrons, beam line elements and REF equipment for the REF customers
Takes shift work for the REF project
Tunes the ion source and cyclotron beams as requested by the REF customers
Assists the REF customers with the SEUSS dosimetry software and end-station equipment
Contributes to the annual maintenance, repair, and upgrade of REF project equipment
Works with the Accelerator Technician on duty to maintain a safe and efficient work environment
Troubleshoots and reports problems with accelerator equipment
Contributes to the overall maintenance of Cyclotron Institute equipment
Participates in the design, maintenance, and implementation of improved detector systems for the Cyclotron Institute
