Job Description

The MacFarlane lab at Texas A&M (Fort Worth) studies the effect of altered B vitamin intake and metabolism on genome stability using molecular techniques. The post-doctoral fellow will conduct laboratory research, mentor students, and publish research findings. Specific research topics will be decided in consultation with the PI.

Responsibilities:

  • In consultation with the PI, design and execute experiments examining the impact of B vitamin intake on markers of genome stability.

  • Keep detailed records of associated experimental details and research data including the development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Perform data analysis and statistical analysis of research experiments and results.

  • Supervise and provide training to junior- and mid-level technical support staff, graduate students, and/or undergraduate students.

  • Lead the writing of research-based publications. Contribute to the writing of grants.

  • Follow appropriate laboratory safety procedures for handling, disposing of and keeping inventory of hazardous chemicals and.

  • Assist in coordinating lab inventory and equipment.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • A PhD degree in nutrition, biology, biochemistry, genetics, or other closely related fields.

  • Laboratory-based PhD research in nutrient metabolism, genetics, or genomics.

Required Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

  • Experience with standard molecular biology techniques, including PCR and gel electrophoresis.

  • Experience planning and performing animal-based experiments.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel is required.

  • Experience with data analysis and interpretation.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Willingness to attend workshops, seminars, and conferences

  • Proven ability to collaborate with others.

Preferred Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

  • Experience with statistical analysis software (R; Jump; SASS; SigmaPlot) is an asset but not required.

  • Experience with the analysis of next-generation sequence (NGS) data is an asset but not required. Candidates who do not have experience in this area must be willing to learn aspects of NGS data analysis applicable to the project.
