Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for assisting public health physicians and professional nursing staff in conducting patient health care services in the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District. Working conditions are in clients' homes and office environment with occasional exposure to hostile people and infectious diseases. Exercises no supervision.

This position is a "grant funded" position, therefore unclassified and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Employees in high-risk positions will be required to obtain relevant immunizations, per SAMHD Policy DM13.2 (https://www.sanantonio.gov/Portals/0/Files/health/HealthServices/Immunizations/DM13-02.pdf) . Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy.

7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday; some evening and weekend hours

Essential Job Functions

  • Obtains and records health data from the patient as applicable to service needs and assesses patient eligibility for program services.

  • Assists patients with health information, guidance and referrals as needed.

  • Provides a variety of health services in the clinic and in the patient's home, which includes occasionally lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 30 pounds to administer care.

  • Observes, records and reports signs of illness and changes in patient's condition and/or response to health maintenance regimes.

  • Maintains supplies and cleanliness/general orderliness of clinic.

  • Conducts group and individual teaching sessions.

  • Performs laboratory tests and administers immunizations as necessary.

  • Participates in local health fairs and special projects.

  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Graduation from a State Approved school of vocational or practical nursing.

  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.

  • License to practice vocational nursing in Texas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual in English & Spanish.

  • Experience with storage, handling, and administering immunizations.

  • Public Health experience.

  • Experience with childhood vaccinations.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, and techniques of nursing.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Knowledge of patient screening and interviewing techniques.

  • Knowledge of medical office procedures.

  • Skill in utilizing a personal computer and rudimentary software.

  • Ability to conduct instructional programs.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

  • Ability to respond rapidly and effectively in emergency situations.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.

  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
