Job Summary

This position will directly support corporate driven animal welfare and 3Rs initiatives related to responsible animal use, care and production across global business units. It will directly assist the Executive Director (ED) in their responsibilities of assessing animal welfare risk and in defining, steering, and coordinating the CRL animal welfare programs globally across all divisions. This position will support the roles of CRL Animal Welfare Specialists (AWS) and company stakeholders on the CRL global animal welfare program and will act as a key contact for animal-welfare related issues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary responsibility (>70% job function) implementation of the Humane Care Imperative (HCI), specifically, responsibility for reviewing, analyzing, and reporting animal welfare data as well as incidents of animal welfare non-compliance through day-to-day oversight of all events including:

  • Notify ED and other pertinent personnel and stakeholders of high risk events, including gathering background information from sites.

  • Input and process events received through the NAVEX/Humane Care Hotline, Humane Care Email, and other sources, as needed.

  • In conjunction with the Corporate Animal Welfare Specialist, engage with site AWS on a regular basis to ensure timely attention to animal welfare events.

  • Finalize events (in conjunction with the Corporate Animal Welfare Specialist) including assuring appropriate CAPA and accurate event classification.

  • Conduct and appropriately document follow-ups with key stakeholders for high risk/sensitive events, in collaboration with ED, GAW.

  • Collaborate with the Corporate Animal Welfare Specialist on cursory preparation of reports and charts/tables/data for animal welfare trend calls.

  • Oversight and delivery of AWETS trend calls including preparation, delivery, and summaries of the presentations and post call surveys.

  • Evaluate animal welfare event trends over time as well as between and within sites and business units.

  • In conjunction with ED, GAW, support animal welfare-related onboarding for new acquisitions.

  • Conduct site visits to evaluate programs and procedures, facilities and equipment, etc. in terms of standards and conditions for animals, including preparing pre and post visit reports.

  • Develop, analyze, and manage day-to-day animal welfare risk management tools, assist with report preparation, as requested.

  • Support the GAW&T team members and IT personnel in maintaining the software database including development of new reports and troubleshooting.

  • Support development of animal welfare related training materials and other animal welfare-related training materials, including internal workshops, AWN calls, webinars, and training shorts.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist the ED, GAW to manage high level projects related to animal welfare programs at CRL.

  • Provide support for GAW&T operations, as needed.

  • Collaborate with various stakeholders to discuss, investigate, prioritize, and monitor uptake of new and ongoing animal welfare initiatives.

  • In conjunction with the ED, investigate confidential animal welfare concerns.

  • Review and assess corporate animal welfare risk factors at a business unit and site level and assisting with documentation and reports.

  • Assist with establishing internal policies and standards on animal welfare at CRL.

  • Develop and support animal welfare-related content for external audiences, e.g. Charles River Short Course, national AALAS meetings.

  • Participate in in-house animal welfare-related studies and information-sharing to determine best practices.

  • Prepare supporting summaries and content to support ED for BOD meeting.

  • Periodically provide material for internal and external communications, e.g., newsblast, Eureka blog and Sales and Marketing.

  • Direct activities of assigned group(s) to ensure effective performance of function.

  • Interview and select qualified departmental personnel. Recommend, review and approve personnel actions, including hiring, promotions and raises. Partner with Human Resources in the handling of disciplinary issues. Prepare and/or approve appropriate personnel action paperwork.

  • Lead on talent management so training and development needs of direct reports are identified and addressed to support succession planning.

  • Monitor performance of direct reports against established annual goals and development plans. Provide regular coaching and counseling. Prepare and deliver salary and performance reviews; review and approve performance and salary appraisals initiated by direct reports.

  • Monitor and determine appropriate levels of departmental overtime. Review and approve vacation/time off requests for direct reports.

  • Develop short- and long-range operating objectives, organizational structure, and staffing requirements.

  • Develop and recommend departmental budget. Authorize expenditures in accordance with budget. Approve budget and expenses of subordinates.

  • Ensure optimum performance of group function. Recommend and implement techniques to improve productivity, increase efficiencies, cut costs, take advantage of opportunities, and maintain state-of-the-art practices.

  • Direct the development and communication of departmental systems, SOPs, policies and procedures. Partner with Human Resources to develop and approve departmental job descriptions; ensure communication of duties and responsibilities to employees.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications

  • Education: Doctoral degree (D.V.M./V.M.D.) in Veterinary Medicine is required. It is highly desirable to have an additional Master’s degree (M.S.) or higher in a discipline relevant to laboratory animal medicine.

  • Experience: 5-15 years related experience.

  • Certification/Licensure: Current license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state or country.

  • Other: ACLAM Diplomate Status required. ACAW Diplomate status is a plus. Excellent public speaking skills required. Excellent writing skills required. Ability to direct scientific evaluation of literature and publication of research data.

  • An equivalent combination of education, experience and certification may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

Physical Demands:

  • Must regularly operate a computer and occasionally operate other common office equipment.

  • Must regularly communicate with employees/customers; must be able to exchange accurate information.

Workplace Requirements:

  • This position is remote-based and requires dedicated work-space equipped to support this environment.

  • This position requires regular (30%) domestic and international travel.

Compensation Data

The pay range for this position is $189,000/yr. - $211,000/yr. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
