Job Description

The successful applicant will understand the business management of ranching operations and work to advance the mission of the King Ranch® Institute for Ranch Management (KRIRM) and the Department of Agriculture, Agribusiness, and Environmental Sciences (AAES). Responsibilities will include teaching one 3-credit hour course per long semester in the subject matter area of ranch accounting, agriculture finance, marketing, and/or price discovery. The successful applicant will also provide business management expertise as a member of an interdisciplinary team that trains ranch managers and serves the ranching industry through case studies, outreach, and applied research. Research findings and discoveries will be disseminated to the ranching industry, academia, and appropriate stakeholders. As a KRIRM team member, the successful candidate will engage in KRIRM outreach efforts and will support the training of graduate students in the KRIRM Masters of Science in Ranch Management program, but may also train graduate students through the Agribusiness program in the Department of AAES. Service contributions to enhance collaborations with agribusiness faculty in the education of undergraduates in the agribusiness-ranch management program will be expected. The person hired will report to the director of KRIRM (75%) and the Department Chair of Agriculture, Agribusiness, and Environmental Sciences (25%). Only candidates hired at the associate or full professor rank will be considered for the Laura and Robert Underbrink Endowed Professorship or Endowed Chair in Agribusiness.

Job Responsibilities

  • Teach agriculture business management courses in the area of ranch accounting, finance, marketing, and business decision-making

  • Develop and maintain a nationally recognized research and outreach program focused on ranch business management

  • Disseminate research discoveries and management recommendations to industry stakeholders and academia through presentations, popular media, and peer-reviewed manuscripts

  • Enhance KRIRM outreach to the ranching industry through industry service projects and casework

  • Serve on KRIRM graduate student committees and provide supportive guidance on graduate student service-learning projects

  • Obtain external funding to support research and outreach efforts

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD from an accredited institution or university in Agriculture Business, Agriculture Economics, Business Management, or other appropriate discipline

  • Experience with livestock production or grazing systems in North America

  • Success in obtaining competitive extramural support for research related to animal or natural resource or management

  • Evidence of exceptional communication, leadership, and mentorship skills

  • Exhibited ability to effectively work in a university environment and with ranching industry stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

  • Passion for teaching and creative discovery in business management of livestock, natural resources, or wildlife enterprises

  • More than three years experience in the management of or consulting with ranching enterprises
