Job Description

The opportunity

As an industry-leader in the High Net Worth insurance market, Manulife is looking for a highly qualified Underwriter to join the High Net Worth team in its Singapore office. Working primarily with bank and international broker distribution channels, this team underwrites complex, often large, life insurance applications in a highly competitive and challenging market

What you will do in the role:

  • Manage all aspects of underwriting process.

  • Select and classify risk according to company philosophy and standards.

  • Assume responsibility for continuing training and development of more junior underwriters.

  • Analyze and interpret medical, non-medical and financial information. Make decisions within approval limits. Determine appropriate requirements.

  • Ability to adapt to changing underwriting philosophy and apply new approaches. Strong independent problem solving ability including research and presentation of potential solutions

  • Communicate and collaborate with the field and head office colleagues to provide the highest quality and service levels to customers.

  • Maintain positive and effective relationships with internal and external partners.

  • Consistently make competitive offers without compromising overall underwriting policies or mortality Participate in project teams

Who we are looking for:

  • Minimum 10 years’ underwriting experience AALU or FALU designation preferred. ACS designation is helpful.

  • Expert knowledge of underwriting function; sound understanding of Company’s various business operations.

  • Awareness of current affairs and issues both corporate and external.

  • General knowledge of referral areas.

  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent analytical skills; ability to define, research and resolve problems.

  • Excellent knowledge of mainframe and PC environment.

  • Ability to create and maintain customer relationships.

  • Ability to prioritize and work effectively under deadlines balancing published service times with an appropriate customer focus.

  • Ability to comprehend, retain and apply current technical information to daily work issues.

  • Solid knowledge of insurance contract law and state legislative requirements.

  • Expert knowledge of reinsurance marketplace (including underwriting strengths and weaknesses) to work proactively with the field where reinsurance is an opportunity.

  • Thorough understanding of automatic reinsurance agreements.

  • Expert knowledge of medical science, technology and terminology and their impact on mortality.

  • Expert knowledge of financial and other non-medical underwriting factors.
