Position Summary:

Serves as a working lead and provides oversight to a small team or teams in specific areas with minimal supervisory duties.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Organizes, delegates tasks and supervises team efforts.

  • Performs animal care duties, cleaning, feeding and observing animals May conduct round of animal rooms as back-up to supervisors. May assist with cage processing operations.

  • Receives, transports and distributes incoming animal shipments and transfers.

  • Oversees the training of new animal care staff, after initial training from the Training Coordinator.

  • Performs daily documentation of project status, including standard animal room reporting.

  • Conducts census and produce cage cards as needed.

  • Monitors inventory levels and requests supplies.

  • May assist with technical procedures such as collecting samples, record keeping, preparing diets or providing medications to animals including topical treatments.

  • May assist with breeding colonies and special projects.

  • This job classification is designated as "essential" at UTHealth Houston. In case of an emergency, "essential" positions are those required to sustain clinical services and/or are responsible for the protection of university assets. Personnel in designated "essential" positions are expected to report to their designated work site during their appointed work schedules, even when the institution has been officially declared to be on "restricted access" or "closed" due to adverse conditions.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) AALAS certification required. Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) AALAS certification preferred.

  • Good oral and written communication skills.

  • Competently operate computer software such as Excel, Word, and Outlook.

  • Understand and execute moderately complex oral or written directions.

Minimum Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Minimum Experience:

Three (3) years working in a laboratory animal facility required. May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.

Security Sensitive:

This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
