The Big Picture:

Howden Australia currently has a vacancy for an experienced Electrical Control and Instrumentation Design and Project Engineer to join our busy team. This is a 12 month fixed-term contract, with the potential to convert to permanent.

The Electrical Control and Instrumentation Design and Project Engineer’s role is focused on providing projects and tenders with electrical engineering design and drafting services to required technical and quality standards, within limited time schedule and budget. The successful candidate will design electrical, control and instrumentation solutions in accordance with client’s specifications, statutory requirements and Howden quality standards, as well as supporting the tendering of mine turnkey proposals by interpreting client’s specifications and assisting in scope definition and costing.

The roles involves some travel of up to 30% of time including mine sites (project specific – thus depends on the nature of the project), there may aslo be some international travel.

What needs to be done?

  • Carry out assigned drafting and design work in compliance with Howden’s offered technical solution, appropriate standards and regulations, budget, schedule, scope and client’s specification.

  • Liaise and co-ordinate, as appropriate, with other disciplines involved on the project (internal and external) to exchange related technical, budget and schedule details.

  • Maintain quality levels throughout the work with particular reference to drawings and associated technical documentation.

  • Maintain project files up-to date with relevant information

  • Carry out electrical system design and drafting, and maintain control over the design solutions carried out by external service providers and suppliers.

  • Develop of P&ID, layout drawings, wiring schematics, instrument and equipment list and ePLAN-based reports (cable schedule, I/O list, BOM, etc.)

  • Ensure EC&I system design takes into consideration all interfaces with other disciplines – mechanical, process and civil

  • Ensure design solution compliance with project’s technical offer, client’s specification, relevant standards and regulations, budget and schedule.

  • Ensure that scope changes are identified, submitted to client and approved.

  • Produce and review ITPs, perform and witness equipment testing as required for internal quality control, FAT and SAT

  • Perform commissioning tasks

  • Help maintain library of technical knowledge

What do you need to bring?

  • Qualification in Electrical Engineering.

  • Strong working knowledge of relevant Australian Standards including AS standards related to surface and underground mines, NSW Coal Mines Health and SafetyCMHS) Act, CMHS Regulations and Queensland Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation

  • Design and/or maintenance experience with electrical installations in mining, coal mines in particular

  • Solid understanding of MV and LV protection

  • Design and/or maintenance experience with MV and LV switchgear, VVVF drives and various types of SoftStarters

  • Experience with prefabricated switchrooms and associated equipment (Air conditioning, fire detection and fire suppression systems, lighting etc.)

  • Solid Turnkey project experience

  • Knowledge of earthing and lightning protection systems.

  • Ability do use AutoCAD for drawing update or design work

  • Ability to program PLC and develop HMI and SCADA functional screens

  • Understanding of control communication protocols

  • Understanding of Electrical Control and Instrumentation (EC&I) systems.

  • Experience with Eplan

  • Ability to define scope of electrical work/producto Ability to write functional specifications

  • Ability to work independently and as part of the team

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated experience in project management from design through to commissioning

Desirable skills, knowledge & behaviours

  • Lighting

  • Electrical design in Hazardous area, especially on Coal mines.

  • Experience with ETAP

  • CPEng & RPEQ

  • Experience working with ventilation system equipment
