Description

The successful candidate for this Clinical Assistant Professor/Clinical Associate Professor will serve as an attending clinical faculty and serve as assistant medical director or medical director of the Transfusion Medicine and Blood Banking Services at Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH), and its network affiliates at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital (SBSH), and Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital (SBELIH). This team member will be part of the general Clinical Pathology faculty within the Pathology Department at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, participating in teaching, research and institutional service missions of the Department.

SBUH is home to the largest blood bank in Suffolk County, supporting a Level 1 Trauma Center and transfusing 20,000 blood products annually. It also operates an active blood donor center, and a robust apheresis program (1,000 therapeutic apheresis procedures annually), which supports multiple services, such as Hematology and Oncology, Urology, and Neurology. The SBSH and SBELIH blood banking services perform 1,600 and 125 annual transfusions, respectively, with apheresis referrals to SBUH. Administrative oversight for SBSH and SBELIH will include periodic travel to these locations and compliance with their regulatory obligations for medical directors such as the New York State Department of Health and the Joint Commission.

As a member of the general Clinical Pathology faculty, the successful candidate will participate in other CP services, including general Clinical Pathology, Hematopathology and Blood Bank call, and teaching medical students, residents, and clinical fellows. This team member will also be expected to engage in scholarly activities involving clinical, translational, or basic research, and provide service as an active committee member for committees spanning the broad mission of an academic medical center.

Academic rank at the Stony Brook University School of Medicine will be commensurate with experience and academic record.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • M.D. (or foreign equivalent).
  • New York State medical license (or eligibility).
  • American Board of Pathology (ABP) Certification in Clinical Pathology.
  • ABP certification in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine OR completion of an accredited Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine fellowship (board-eligible), OR currently enrolled in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine fellowship.
  • Eligibility for New York State Department of Health Certificates of Qualification for Transfusion Services, Immunohematology at a minimum.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as an attending physician in an accredited Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine service.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in an accredited clinical apheresis service.
  • Demonstration or evidence of scholarly productivity.
  • Teaching experience in clinical pathology, TM/BB, or similar post-graduate level areas.

Non-Tenure Track position. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. To qualify for a senior faculty appointment, the candidate must meet the criteria established by the School of Medicine (School of Medicine's Criteria for Appointment, Promotion and Tenure).
