Description:

This is the entry-level position for the MercyOne Surgical Tech apprenticeship program. Under direct supervision, transports patients from their room or SDS to the Surgery Holding Area or the Surgery rooms. Performs routine tasks within the department to which they are assigned, such as maintaining supplies, turning rooms between surgeries, running specimens to the lab and entering same in the computer, cleaning rooms between surgeries, ordering and restocking. Using Principles of Asepsis, opens sterile supplies and assists in preparing rooms for surgical procedure.

Position Purpose:

Under direct supervision, transports patients from their room or SDS to the Surgery Holding Area or the Surgery rooms. Performs routine tasks within the department to which they are assigned, such as maintaining supplies, turning rooms between surgeries, running specimens to the lab and entering same in the computer, cleaning rooms between surgeries, ordering and restocking. Using Principles of Asepsis, opens sterile supplies and assists in preparing rooms for surgical procedure. Does surgical hand scrub, gowns, gloves and holds retractors during surgical procedures. Assists with sterile surgical prep.

What you will Do:

  • Ensures patients are properly identified according to the patient identification policy prior to transporting to holding area or Surgery.

  • Assists the circulating nurse or anesthesia personnel in transferring the patient to the operating room table.

  • Assists the surgeon, anesthesia, and circulating nurse in transferring, positioning the patient for the surgical procedure. Assures all bony prominences and nerve points are padded.

  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of assigned department including operating rooms, scrub sink area, halls, and equipment utilizing 5S lean techniques.

  • Assists with maintaining appropriate levels of inventory by picking up needed materials when necessary.

  • Performs various other departmental functions on occasion, such as delivering schedules, mail and routing messages.

  • Transports patients with IV pumps and/or oxygen and requests assistance from other staff when needed.

  • Obtains sterile supplies and instruments for circulator and opens onto sterile field aseptically.

  • Using principles of asepsis, performs surgical hand scrub, gowns, gloves, and hold retractors for surgical procedure.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Current Basic Life Support Certification.

  • Knowledge of and experience in back care and transfer techniques preferred.

  • Knowledge of aseptic technique preferred.

  • Is able to communicate effectively with all members of the health care team. Is able to perform a variety of duties characterized by frequent change.
