DESC (Downtown Emergency Service Center) is a nonprofit organization working to help people with the complex needs of homelessness, substance use disorders, and serious mental illness achieve their highest potential for health and well-being through comprehensive services, treatment, and housing. JOB DEFINITION:

This position will be working temporarily (10 months) as a Construction Coordinator at a variety of DESC buildings. The position will report to the Director of Facilities and Asset Management. Please note this position has working hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to align with construction working hours.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Proactively outreach and engage with clients and non-clients that are loitering and camping along construction sites and encouraging people to use alternatives to loitering near the construction site.

  • Attend daily construction meetings to understand daily construction activities and how activities will impact the project. Prepare mitigation plans to ensure both success of DESC clients and contractors.

  • Assist Housing staff with proper client notifications in relation to construction activities, such as posted notices.

  • Prepare daily and weekly summaries of construction activities to include planning for future and upcoming construction activities.

  • Review critical path construction schedule and provide weekly updates to the Director of Facilities and Asset Management.

  • Enforce the DESC Good Neighbor policy with DESC Clients.

  • Provide assistance to newly housed clients and others who are experiencing crises caused by mental illness and/or excessive drug/alcohol consumption.

  • Documenting and communicating repeated violations of the Good Neighbor policy. Intervene in client crises (medical, mental health, interpersonal).

  • De-escalate arguments and altercations happening immediately inside/outside of DESC buildings.

  • Take a lead role in coordinating and communicating construction activities to the Housing team, including participating in the daily briefs and weekly team meetings.

  • Initiate and maintain appropriate social interactions with clients.

  • Think and act collaboratively with staff and clients to improve safety and cleanliness around DESC projects.

  • Calling or coordinating the calling of 9-1-1 to address emergency situations on the block.

  • Coordinate with and direct emergency first responders to developments that require immediate attention.

  • Discourage and report predatory and/or illicit behavior.

  • Actively participate in staff meetings and in service trainings.

  • Assist with coordination of walk throughs with vendors.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

  • Commitment to the Harm Reduction model and incorporating it into all aspects of the position.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least one-year experience in human services (paid or volunteer), preferably working with adults challenged by homelessness, mental illness and/or chemical dependency.

  • Basic understanding of homelessness and various characteristics of homeless adult populations; experience with mental illness and/or chemical dependency preferred.

  • Demonstrated de-escalation skills in unique settings.

  • Basic understanding of construction activities or ability to learn. Previous construction background is a plus.

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with staff from various backgrounds and disciplines.

  • Ability to work effectively with clients displaying a wide range of unpleasant and/or bizarre behavior.

  • Subscribe to philosophy of cooperation and continuity across programs, and of consideration and respect for clients.

Salary Description

$84,607.44 - $95,754.00 annually
