This position, Research Scientist/Engineer 2 (NE S UAW RSE) full-time, aims to develop an understanding of energy metabolism in the retina in normal and diseased states.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Maintain laboratory mouse colony, set up crosses, wean mouse litters, genotype mice - 10% 2. Design strategies and experiments protocols to measure metabolic flux in ocular tissues - 10% 3. Harvest tissues from mice and use them to perform biochemical assays to test models of metabolism - 10% 4. Cell culture of retinal pigment epithelium cells and harvesting cells for biochemical analyses to evaluate metabolism - 10% 5. Design and perform enzyme assays on mouse tissue and cell culture samples and interpret the results - 20% 6. Prepare biological samples for mass spectrometry, perform mass spectrometry analyses and interpret the results - 20% 7. Help with lab management including stocking supplies, insuring lab safety and establishing lab protocols - 5% 8. Write, edit reports and present at meetings biochemical findings in the context of biological functions of metabolism - 15%

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry and 2 years of of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education/experience.

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Familiarity with mass spectrometry methods. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with tissue culture methods.
