The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Lead Lab Assistant WORK SCHEDULE

  • Relocation incentive for eligible new employees. REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school or GED equivalent; WA MA-Phlebotomist Certification; 1yr exp as phlebotomist or lab assistant in a clinical laboratory or medical setting

  • Completion of a phlebotomy courseOR

  • Medical Assistant - Phlebotomy (MA-P) certification with the WA State Department of Health; If the candidate does not have an MA-P, they will be required to complete an in-house training program. As a condition of employment, the MA-P must be obtained within 90 days of the start date. PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible for smooth day-to-day operations in the laboratory processing area

  • Plans, organizes and assigns staff work assignments and breaks them in a manner that maintains a smooth workflow regardless of workload.

  • Calls staff in to work in times of low or critical staffing as needed.

  • Organizes the work assignments and daily schedule to support area training activities.

  • Communicate with the supervisor concerning the lab’s operational status, training needs, personnel issues, and staff concerns.

  • Works with manager/supervisor to review workplace procedures and policies.

  • Reports issues or concerns from other laboratory divisions or hospital staff through hc1 or other reporting mechanisms, i.e.

  • Quality Improvement tracking mechanism, Incident Reports, or Patient Safety Network (PSN).

  • Must be able to perform tasks on all benches in processing areas to oversee and fill in on all benches whenever needed during short staffing periods.

  • Performs limited test setup and reporting as required.

  • Routine bench performance will allow all staff to observe areas for performance improvements.

  • Assisted in preparing the monthly staffing schedule and calling for additional support when the department faced critical staffing shortages.

  • Perform other duties as required or as assigned by supervisor or manager.Problem Resolution

  • Solves specimen problems promptly, thoroughly, and accurately, providing appropriate documentation for manager/supervisor review.

  • Makes constructive suggestions for improvements in the laboratory and staffing distribution.

  • Keeps laboratory staff informed regarding specimen and/or handling problems or procedural changes.Training of New Staff and Continued Training of Current Employees

  • Oversees training of new staff to ensure that training is completed and documented on time.

  • Provide and update training materials.

  • Work with supervisor to perform, assess, and document competency evaluations of current employees in MediaLab.

  • Provide communications about opportunities for continuing education to all staff.Safe Work Practices and Responsibilities

  • Directs staff to ensure the workplace is clean, neat and professional in appearance.

  • Oversees and ensures that biohazardous precautions are followed at all times, including the disposal of biohazard waste in a timely manner.

  • Wears personal protective equipment and ensures staff properly uses personal protective equipment as required.Computer/Application Functions

  • Performs computer functions required for completion of tasks and acts as a resource to others.

  • Ensures that specimen processing runs smoothly during scheduled and unscheduled computer downtimes.

  • Understand how to use the Laboratory Information System (LIS), PuTTY, Epic/Beaker (HIS), Hc1, OnBase, MediaLab and Sunquest Collect for problem resolution.Documentation

  • Ensure that staff always follow established departmental policies and division-specific processes and guidelines.

  • Integrates new or revised processes into the workplace.

  • Author new guidelines and job aids under direction of manager/supervisor.

  • Perform biennial review of current documentation per CAP requirements.Confidentiality

  • Maintains patient confidentiality regarding all written, verbal and computerized patient information per UW Medicine requirements.

  • Maintains confidentiality regarding concerning staff and personnel issues.Other Miscellaneous Duties

  • Reports equipment and or facility problems in a timely manner and provides adequate notice to staff.

  • Ensure temperatures are monitored daily and take corrective action in case of equipment failure.

  • Provide support to the department to ensure we have adequate supplies and tools for the staff to do their job.

  • Maintains and or notifies manager/supervisor of supply inventory needs; order as needed.

  • Provide safety checks of equipment, reagents or bench practices as needed.Specialized Roles

  • Under the direction of a manager and/or supervisor, may serve in a number of specialized roles. These include divisional Quality Assurance, as a committee representative to implement new systems or processes, as the division’s envoy for specialized department or hospital-related initiatives, and/or working on other projects as assigned.
