POSITION PURPOSE
Provide overall lab management and support of a major research lab at the Department of Biochemistry, UW School of Medicine. Veesler Research Lab is a major program under the Department of Biochemistry performing cutting –edge research in Biomedical Sciences, including in the fields of structural biology, biochemistry, virology, immunology, and glycoprotein production.

The Lab Manager (Program Operations Specialist (E S 7)) is a key position critical to the success of this program’s operations.

Position Complexities: Management and coordination of a large research program (Veesler Research Lab) utilizing scientific background and superior organizational skills. High degree of competence and excellent organizational skills are crucial for this role.

Position Dimensions and Impact to the University: This is a key role for the Veesler Research Lab designed to ensure smooth program operations, and is crucial to the lab’s success. The Veesler Research Lab is a major research program within the UW School of Medicine with national and international reputation involved in rigorous research in cutting-edge science, and success of this program’ scientific mission greatly contributes to the UW research mission as well as the overall scientific advances.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Overall lab management in the Veesler lab: Management and coordination of a large research lab operations, to include complex project support, resource allocation, management of purchasing operations including negotiation with vendors and suppliers to ensure lab research needs are met; includes working closely with the Principal Investigator to allocate resources, shared responsibility for program results, as well as working closely with the central departmental fiscal and operational administration to ensure the Veesler Research Lab (Program) conforms to institutional, departmental, state and federal policies or regulations.

High level of maturity, responsibility and dependability required.

Specifically, the successful candidate will:

  • 30% - Manage the entire cycle of the Veesler Lab Purchasing and Procurement operations: assess the program needs, negotiate with vendors, place equipment and supply orders and coordinate delivery to ensure smooth functioning of research project and lab needs. Interactions with vendors and service teams will be a key part of the position to assess and address the needs of the lab, negotiate with vendors to secure the most competitive pricing. The position will require a high-level of organization and independent judgement to assess the needs, order and maintain dynamic inventories to ensure uninterrupted operation.

  • 20% - Work with the Principal Investigator to allocate financial and material resources across projects, track consumables, assess and forecast procurement needs.

  • 10% - Participate in the development and implementation of safety protocols and chemical/biohazard disposal procedures to ensure all UW and EH&S protocols are adhered to. Participate in annual EH&S lab safety reviews, ensure hazardous material, BSA safety cabinets and other required permits are up to date

  • 10% - Oversee the maintenance and functioning of large and small scientific equipment in the lab to ensure adherence to code.

  • 10% - Oversee proper functioning of cell culture rooms for advanced virological research : cell maintenance, ensuring proper supply of C02, C02 tank exchange, incubator cleaning, water levels, refilling supplies).

  • 10% - Maintain complex Program databases of research reagents to ensure timely and up-to-date records.

  • 10% - Participate, under the PI oversight, with Materials Transfer Agreements; compiling data and writing of grant reports in line with the federal sponsor requirements and in accord with the UW, OSP and departmental policies and procedures. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry, Biophysics or related discipline + 2 years of experience in related field.

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to utilize scientific training and knowledge in biochemistry or cell biology to facilitate and contribute to the research goals of the Veesler lab.

  • Excellent analytical skills, good judgement and dedication to project goals.

  • Project management skills in a fast-paced scientific lab/ program.

  • Superior organizational and negotiation skills to manage the Procurement cycle for the Veesler Research.

  • Lab (Program) to include interactions with vendors and service teams to address the program needs (purchasing, negotiations, maintenance repairs).

  • Asset allocation and forecasting skills; fiscal responsibility.

  • Maintenance of large and small equipment (e.g. AKTAs, ultra, plate washer, plate reader, BLI, incubators, hoods, -80s).

  • Maintaining common cell lines/start new cell lines.

  • Maintaining and updating databases (constructs, antibodies, cell lines....); database and maps of reagents in lab.

  • Organizing shipping of reagents and associated MTAs.
