The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Lab Assistant WORK SCHEDULE

  • 40 hours per week

  • Relocation incentive for eligible new employees. REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent. PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Performs assigned semi-technical procedures

  • Phlebotomy: Obtains specimens from inpatients, outpatients, and outreach accounts according to the time guidelines established by the department.

  • Specimen Processing: Logs tests in the computer, labels, centrifuges, prepares aliquots, and delivers specimens.

  • Reference Lab Sample Preparation: Processes, prepares, and ships reference lab samples, according to reference laboratory specifications.

  • Follows laboratory protocols, policies and safely procedures.

  • Answers technical questions relating to laboratory procedures and policies.

  • Troubleshoots and resolves problems and customer service issues. Examples include Pending orders and specimen draws; finding lost specimens; add-on tests; scanning specimens into storage application, etc. When unable to resolve an issue in a timely manner, asks supervisor or lead for assistance.

  • Reporting: As assigned, locates patient results, and generates reports/faxes.

  • Competently uses computers systems (LIS, HIS, etc.)Work environment, supplies, equipment, and waste handling

  • Maintains a clean and organized working environment. Cleans and prepares work areas.

  • Ensures assigned areas are stocked with appropriate, cost-effective levels of supplies and reagents. Takes inventory and orders supplies when needed. Handles (opens packages, properly stores, etc.) incoming supplies.

  • Maintains assigned equipment according to laboratory procedures.

  • Disposes of specimens and other hazardous wastes safely and appropriately according to established laboratory protocols.Support and collaboration

  • Assists in training new personnel.

  • Works professionally as part of a team; assists other team members as requested and shares knowledge/expertise.

  • Participates in achieving established Patient Safety and departmental goals and Performance Improvement activities.
