The Food Service Supervisor oversees program support staff involved in the performance of duties associated with a highly specialized food service program at Friday Harbor Laboratories.

This food service program is based on San Juan Island, at the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Marine Laboratories. The dining hall serves over 300 enrolled students annually as well as visiting conferences, field trips, meetings and special events. This specialized service program generates over $300K in annual revenues.

FHL’s Food service program is unique due to its remote location and size. All materials are received via the Washington State Ferry system and employees are limited to those who want to live on a remote island. Both of these factors have a large impact on both the day-to-day responsibilities this position faces as well as the long-term planning necessary for successful operation.

In addition to supervising, this position is responsible for a multitude of duties including planning, preparing reports, assessing inventory, cooking, and monitoring safety.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Within the Friday Harbor Laboratories food service program: • Establishes work priorities, ensure deadlines are met; weekly inventory for food orders and supplies; • Takes a leading role in staff meetings and conferences; • Responsible for maintaining proper record keeping, work schedules, attendance and leave reports, procurement of supplies, accident reports; reviews reports prepared by subordinates; • Develops information to support budgetary requests; projects income and expenditures required to maintain program activities; administers program budgets; signs vouchers; receives orders; • Maintains records and creates reports regarding number of meals served, food costs and labor forecasts and/or usage; accident reports, MSDS information, employee health cards and food service safety/protocols; • Coordinates with visiting groups (conference and field trip coordinators) to plan their food/event needs; prepares meal design for catering, and executes catering projects in their capacity; • Prepares and cooks meals 2 days a week. Covers shifts for cook and or prep as needed to keep food service operational; • May use word processing, graphics, statistical, spreadsheet and/or data base software; • Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

High school graduation or equivalent AND three years of applicable experience in food service OR equivalent education/experience.
