The Director of Robotics & Controls – Controls, based in Santa Clara, CA., will lead their team in the design of robotic control algorithms for instruments to build a scalable OTTAVA robotic surgical business impacting millions of patients and expanding the capabilities of physicians globally.

This director will be a key technical and strategic leader on one of the most exciting programs and J&J and in healthcare in general! The candidate must bring a strong blend of technical ability and people leadership to bear on this critical role. They must also balance depth in robotics with a passionate focus on understanding and meeting the needs of clinicians and operating room staff.

Responsibilities

Lead and grow a team of 25 engineers and managers across two geographic campuses in the development and implementation of algorithms to control sophisticated robotic hardware for OTTAVA

Establish team initiatives to achieve program goals and improve functional excellence

Champion teamwork between the OTTAVA Hardware, Systems Engineering, Software, and Robotics & Controls Instrument teams across the Santa Clara and Cincinnati facilities

Create and implement standard processes of software development lifecycle

Mentor senior managers, managers, and individual contributors

Maintain functional alignment within OTTAVA R&D leadership

Provide strategic robotic control mentorship to the OTTAVA Senior Leadership

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of bachelors’ degree or equivalent experience in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or similar Engineering field is required. An advanced degree is strongly preferred.

  • 10 years of industry experience in Research & Development or related functions is required

  • 3 years of people management experience with direct reports is required

  • Previous experience in robotic control algorithm design and implementation is required.

  • Understanding of robotics fundamentals (e.g. kinematics, dynamics, control theory, modelling, calibration, system characterization & identification) is required

  • Demonstration of successfully bringing complex products from concept to formal testing (e.g. verification & validation) is an asset.

  • Previous experience successfully launching medical device products is beneficial.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively recruit, develop, manage and coach associates (including manager level talent) to strengthen organizational capabilities is highly desirable

  • Demonstrated success in partnering and influencing across a matrix environment is required.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and partners is required

  • Ability to travel up to 10%, international and domestic, is required

The anticipated salary range for this role is $193,000-$312,110
