KSTS, Telemundo 48 Bay Area, is looking for an experienced, creative, and motivated Managing Editor to execute the editorial vision and brand of the duopoly News Department. The successful candidate will oversee the department’s newsgathering across all platforms, including long- and short-range planning on all platforms.

 

JOB DUTIES:

  • Manage the daily editorial process and quality of content, including all newsgathering efforts

  • Work with Assignment Desk Editors to ensure proper coverage of events throughout the Bay Area and suburbs

  • Conceive and execute daily programs incorporating top news stories and live reports (hard and feature) for both afternoon and evening newscasts. This includes approval of rundowns and management/ supervision of On-Air Talent, Producers, Content Producers, and Production team

  • Plan and lead coverage for major stories and special events (e.g., political elections, Olympics, etc.)

  • Work with reporters on story development including follow-ups and the development of exclusive angles

  • Review and approve reporter content and copy for brand alignment, style, storytelling ethos, agreement with editorial policy, errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

  • Direct and deliver production elements on a deadline

  • Review daily line-up of stories and segments; develop future segments, stories, and interviews for all platforms

  • Work directly with VP of News, News Director, and Assistant News Director to ensure superior breaking news coverage across all platforms

  • Coordinate local news coverage with NBC Bay Area - KNTV, to maximize synergies of the duopoly   stations

  • Responsible for making sure stories and coverage comply with NBC News policies and standards, and that they are factual, accurate, fair, and balanced

  • Assist with leading and enforcing the station’s Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) program.

  • Collaborate with the Marketing Department on daily topical promotions

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

•    Minimum 5 years of experience in newsgathering, news production and/or news operations

•    Bachelor’s Degree in journalism or related broadcast field

 

ADDITIONAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:

•   Able to work longer weekly hours as well as weekends when necessary with short notice

•    Must be willing to work in San Jose, CA

•    Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States.

DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS:

• Minimum 3 years of management and leadership experience in functions and personnel

  • Strong leadership and managing skills

•   Exceptional editorial, storytelling, and copy-editing skills

•    Ability to recognize and meet the varying demands of each content platform and their deadlines

•   Open to new and creative ways of acquiring content by being an innovative thinker

•   Firm understanding of digital media and support technologies

•   Ability to effectively motivate and coach team members

•   Working knowledge of the Bay Area market

•   Outstanding interpersonal communication skills (oral and written)

•   Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment to shift priorities quickly among multiple projects and do what is necessary to execute on short notice

•   Fluent in Spanish

•   Working experience in a television newsroom and within a large media company

•  Adept at social media and its applications for news content and with newsroom environment

 

Additional Requirements:

Salary range: $100,000 - $115,000 (bonus eligible)
