The Opportunity:

The Legal department is looking for the next addition to our legal team -- a great lawyer who will support our trucking technology platform, trucking procurement and sales teams, as well as our warehousing technology and operations teams.

As Trucking & Warehousing Transportation Counsel, you’ll join a global team and report directly to the Chief Legal Officer. You will partner directly with executives and senior business leaders on innovative technology-forward solutions to disrupt the US trucking industry, negotiate commercial contracts with various participants in the trucking and warehousing supply chain and ensure the Company’s compliance with applicable legal and compliance obligations.

You Will:

Lead Product Review for Innovative Trucking, Warehousing and Fulfillment Platforms:

  • Be the lead legal advisor to the Product & Engineering teams in charge of our trucking brokerage platform application for both brokers and motor carrier users, including for compliance with all applicable laws and regulations and ensuring terms and conditions applicable to the use of the platform and the relationship with Flexport are clearly outlined between all parties.

  • Review iterations to our current fulfillment product platform in which companies of all sizes (but in particular SMB enterprises) coordinate the last-mile delivery of their cargo within the United States

Lead Commercial Contracts with Trucking & Warehousing Providers:

  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts in the US and internationally, including terms of service, warehousing and fulfillment agreements, carrier, broker and transportation agreements, agreements with shippers, partnership agreements, and procurement agreements

  • Coordinate and collaborate with various teams such as Product, Engineering, Sales, 3PL Operations, and Procurement to collect input, ensuring our agreements appropriately reflect business needs.

  • Advise, support and coach the business on risk, negotiating points and agreement structures in various supply chain agreements

  • Serve as a trusted advisor and business partner across the company by providing counsel and guidance for accomplishing Flexport’s overall business objectives

You Should Have:

  • 8+ years of experience representing companies in the transportation industry including trucking (asset operating carriers and/or property brokers), warehousing, and/or fulfillment

  • Experience negotiating various supply chain transportation service agreements (motor carriers, brokers, warehouses and 3PL providers).

  • A strong preference for applicants with litigation experience or experience handling pre-litigation claims and disputes in the trucking industry.

  • Command of federal and state laws and regulations governing trucking, property brokerage, warehousing, 3PL services, carrier liens, and financial transactions in the transportation industry.

  • A strong appreciation of how transportation services are actually performed that empowers you to provide clear, actionable legal advice about operations and strategic plans.

  • A working knowledge of marine, cargo, logistics and liability insurance is a strong plus.

  • An understanding of and familiarity with platforms, apps and software in use in the US transportation industry - and specifically in US trucking - is a strong plus.

  • The ability to manage a number of long term strategic projects while providing day-to-day guidance to clients about a variety of legal issues.

  • A strong work ethic and a desire to meaningfully engage with multiple teams on a regular basis.

  • Common sense, great judgment, and a good sense of humor.

  • Ability to assess risk and provide sound, commercially-minded legal advice to Executives and senior business leaders on structure of M&A transactions

  • Ability to work on your own and prioritize multiple, often competing deliverables while managing expectations and meeting deadlines

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to coordinate effectively and gain trust and confidence with personnel at many different levels

  • Ability to work as a team member of the legal department in a scalable, autonomous and accountable manner, demonstrating flexibility across deal types and time zones

  • Excellent communication skills to interact with both internal clients & colleagues as well as external parties (counsel, customers, supply chain vendors) while addressing complex issues in an accurate, clear, and thorough manner.

The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range displayed, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education and / or training.

The US base salary range for this position: (exclusive of bonus, equity and benefits.)

$212,000—$289,000 USD
