Microsoft Corporation Principal Mechanical Engineer in San Antonio, Texas

Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) is the engine that powers our cloud services. As a Principal Mechanical Engineer in the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Office of CO+I, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing new products and solutions that improve the performance, efficiency, and reliability of Microsoft's data centers. You will work with a cross-functional team of engineers, researchers, and business partners to identify customer needs, generate innovative ideas, and deliver high-quality solutions. You will also collaborate with external vendors and suppliers to ensure alignment with Microsoft's standards and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical systems and components for data center applications, such as structural engineering, thermal management, cooling, airflow, and acoustics.

  • Perform engineering analysis, simulation, and testing to validate the functionality, performance, and reliability of the products and solutions.

  • Prepare and review technical documentation, such as design specifications, drawings, test plans, test reports, and patents.

  • Support the fabrication, assembly, and installation of the products and solutions in the data center environment.

  • Conduct root cause analysis and troubleshooting of the products and solutions in case of issues or failures.

  • Research and evaluate new technologies and trends in the mechanical engineering field and data center industry.

  • Communicate and present the project status, results, and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 9+ years related technical engineering experienceo OR Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related technical engineering experienceo OR Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experienceo OR Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experienceo OR equivalent experience.

  • 3+ years experience with mission critical mechanical systems

  • 3+years experience with designing systems and/or developing products for industrial or mission critical environments.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 15+ years related technical engineering experienceo OR Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 12+ years related technical engineering experienceo OR Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related technical engineering experienceo OR Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years related technical engineering experienceo OR equivalent experience.

  • Experience with cross-disciplined systems design (electrical, IT/Telecom, supervisory control and data acquisition).

  • Data center thermal systems design, analysis, and optimization of cooling systems for data center environments, hydronics, cooling distribution, and heat exchangers.

  • Data Center and data center product structural analysis.

Mechanical Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
