The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a dedicated Decision Science Analyst (Mid-Level) to participate in Hiring Our Heroes (HOH) Fellowship Cohort 24-3 with USAA. The HOH Fellowship Program builds an extraordinary experience for transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses that increase competitiveness and improve opportunities to find meaningful employment by providing development, skills, and exposure to corporate working environment and private sector business operations. HOH Fellowship Programs are best-in-class workforce development programs that are cohort based and twelve weeks in duration.

In this position you will provide decision support for business areas across the enterprise. Staff in this area will be responsible for applying mathematical and statistical techniques and/or innovative /quantitative analytical approaches to draw conclusions and make 'insight to action' recommendations to answer business objectives and drive change. The essence of work performed by the Decision Science Analyst involves gathering, manipulating, and synthesizing data (e.g., attributes, transactions, behaviors, etc.), models and other relevant information to draw conclusions and make recommendations resulting in implementable strategies.

As a participant in the Military Fellowship Program, we understand that in most cases Fellows are ending their active service commitments and actively relocating. Therefore, while participating in the Fellowship program, Fellows are authorized to work remotely.

If selected for full time employment, we offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position can be based in one of the following locations: Charlotte, NC, Chesapeake, VA, Colorado Springs, CO, Phoenix, AZ, Plano, TX, San Antonio, TX or Tampa, FL.

Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What you'll do:

  • Leverage intermediate and some advanced business, analytical and technical knowledge to participate in discussions with cross functional teams to understand and collaborate on business objectives and influence solution strategies.

  • Apply advanced analytical techniques to solve business problems that are typically medium to large scale with impact to current and/or future business strategy.

  • Apply innovative and scientific/quantitative analytical approaches to draw conclusions and make 'insight to action' recommendations to answer the business objective and drive the appropriate change.

  • Translate recommendation into communication materials to effectively present to colleagues for peer review and mid-to-upper-level management.

  • Incorporate visualization techniques to support the relevant points of the analysis and ease the understanding for less technical audiences.

  • Identify and gathers the relevant and quality data sources required to fully answer and address the problem for the recommended strategy through testing or exploratory data analysis (EDA).

  • Integrate/transform disparate data sources and determines the appropriate data hygiene techniques to apply.

  • Thoroughly document assumptions, methodology, validation and testing to facilitate peer reviews and compliance requirements.

  • Understand and adopt emerging technology that can affect the application of scientific methodologies and/or quantitative analytical approaches to problem resolutions.

  • Deliver analysis/findings in a manner that conveys understanding, influences mid to upper-level management, garners support for recommendations, drives business decisions, and influences business strategy.

  • Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

  • Bachelor's degree in quantitative analytics field such as Economics, Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Actuarial Sciences, Operations Research, Data and/or Business Analysis, Data Science or other quantitative discipline; OR 4 years of related experience in statistics, mathematics or quantitative analytics (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.

  • 4 years of experience in data/analytics or functional business experience within the respective industry of responsibility OR an Advanced degree in quantitative analytics field such as Economics, Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Actuarial Sciences, Operations Research, Data and/or Business Analysis, Data Science, or other quantitative discipline with 2 years’ experience in data/analytics or functional business experience within the respective industry of responsibility.

  • Demonstrates competency in mathematical and statistical techniques and approaches used to drive fact-based decision-making.

  • Intermediate and some advanced knowledge of data analysis tools, data visualization, developing analysis queries and procedures in SQL, SAS, BI tools or other analysis software, and relevant industry data & methods and ability to connect external insights to business problems.

  • Current participant in one of the following Hiring Our Heroes Fellowship Programs: 24-3 Hiring our Heroes (HOH) Cohort or a current USAA Contractor in the Non-Direct, 24-2 HOH program.

What we offer:

Hiring Our Heroes Fellows are paid by the HOH program.

If selected for a full-time role, USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The hiring range for this position is: $89,990 - $172,000.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
