State of Utah - Jobs Student Services Coordinator in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

This is a manager-level job reporting to an Educational Director.   The Student Services Coordinator provides leadership for behavior support and school-based mental health; school counseling; Section 504,Title IX,and other equity requirements; and school nursing and wellness activities at the Utah State Board of Education (USBE). The position is part of the agency management team and formulates,interprets,and implements Federal and state statute and USBE policy and programs aimed at improving both the compliance and quality of educational programs in local education agencies (LEAs). The position supervises Educational Specialists and support staff,manages program implementation,and oversees section budgets. The Student Services Coordinator reviews legislation and USBE Rules and gives recommendations regarding the impact they may have on educational programs,preparing reports,statistics,and program analysis. This job is unique to the USBE. Principal Duties The Educational Coordinator also:

  • Oversees programs and professional learning that support appropriate student behavior in schools,including the implementation of the Least Restrictive Behavior Interventions and Supports (LRBI) manual.
  • Ensure contracts to improve student behavior supports are monitored and used appropriately and contractors provide the services and supports outlined in the contracts.
  • Collaborates with the other teams in the Student Support section (Special Education,Child Nutrition,Youth in Care,Prevention,School Safety,Adult Education,Federal Programs and Related State Initiatives,) to align and improve compliance,services and supports to LEAs.
  • Collaborates with other teams across the agency to align and improve compliance,services and supports to LEAs.
  • Supervises personnel including hiring,determining workload,delegating assignments,training,monitoring,evaluating performance,and initiating corrective or disciplinary actions.
  • Administers Student Services team program budgets.
  • Leads and/or participates in a USBE Strategic Plan Goal or Strategy team.
  • Manages one or more statewide or agency-wide projects(s)/initiative(s). Determines project/initiative goals and objectives and/or chairs committees established to support the project/initiative.
  • Sets goals,establishes priorities,manages resources,develops concepts and approaches,reviews progress and results of projects; makes management decisions.
  • Recommends,advocates,and/or implements,new and/or changes to existing,policies and procedures,laws,or regulations.
  • Represents the agency with federal,state,and local government units,in the media,or with private organizations.
  • Monitors program and/or project/initiative budget including revenues,expenditures,budget projection,etc.
  • Provides consultation,makes recommendations,gives appropriate advice,and/or facilitates decisions.
  • Writes or drafts technical reports,articles,or related material based on research,investigation,or analysis.
  • Organizes meetings,conferences,or workshops: arrange facility and equipment reservations,speakers,meals,travel,etc. 
  • Write and update standard operating procedures and technical assistance documents.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

  • Principles,theories,and practices of behavior supports,school-based mental health and wellness,and students services
  • Pre-K to post-high instructional methods and techniques,including specially designed instruction for behavior support
  • Principles,theories,and practices of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
  • Principles,theories,and practices of customer service and public relations
  • Principles,theories,and practices of adult learning theory and adult instructional coaching
  • Principles,theories ,and practices of budget management
  • Understanding f evidence-based practices
  • Research methods,techniques,and/or sources of information
  • Supervise others by assigning/directing work,conducting employee evaluations,staff training and development,taking appropriate disciplinary/corrective actions,making hiring/termination recommendations,etc.
  • Develop and/or implement new policies/procedures/standards and/or rules/regulations
  • Deliver presentations or training using acceptable methods and techniques
  • Facilitate or lead committees,meetings,teams,or work groups to encourage participation,build mutual trust,respect,and cooperation among participants
  • Communicate information and ideas clearly,and concisely,in writing; read and understand the information presented in writing
  • Identify the best person for a task,delegate assignments,and direct people as they work
  • Control or direct the operation of a program or function
  • Develop and maintain applicable professional contacts,resources,and /or networks
  • Speak clearly,concisely,and effectively; listen to,and understand,information and ideas as presented verbally
  • Deal with people in a manner that shows sensitivity,tact,and professionalism
  • Special education laws,rules,regulations,policies,and procedures related to behavior support
  • Coordinate the activities or tasks of people,groups,and/or organization(s)
  • Specific specialty area of assignment
  • Provide technical assistance to the district and charter school staff
  • Clear,concise and comprehensive writing skills 

Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is someone who has:

  • MA/MS/MEd Degree in Education,Special Education,School Counseling,School Psychology,Speech-Language Pathology,Juris Doctorate,or a related field of study.
  • Current USBE Education Administrative/Supervisory License or related experience/license.
  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) license.
  • Knowledge of multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS).
  • At least five years of educational administration experience at the building or central office level or related supervisory experience.
