Job Summary

The Venosa Laboratory in the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology at the University of Utah invites applications for a laboratory staff position beginning in 2024. The laboratory is currently studying the epithelial-immune cell crosstalk regulating inflammatory processes in the lung. We are particularly interested in studying how epithelial cell dysfunction (via genetic mutations) exacerbates injury induced by air pollution (i.e., ozone, particulate matter, wildfire smoke). To address this scientific question, we leverage a novel murine model of lung injury and fibrosis initiated by a mutation in the pulmonary epithelial cell specific Surfactant Protein-C. See related publications:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29920187;https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/30910861.

Applicants for the research scientist position will be coordinating three major aspects of the laboratory:

1) COLONY MAINTENANCE – manage and maintain colonies of various mouse models, including PCR -based genotyping; conducting timed pregnancy (occasional); performing DNA / RNA purification.

2) WET BENCH EXPERIMENT – the laboratory specialist will perform mouse procedures including surgeries (training will be provided), drug delivery (intraperitoneal, intravascular and intratracheal), and biochemical analysis of tissue (special stain, histochemistry, western blot).

3) CLERICAL WORK – the position will include day-to-day lab material purchases, ability to maintain the laboratory and the animal colony up to ASCUC and EHS standards, as well as keeping well organized and rigorous records.

Depending on previous experience, the research scientist will be asked to perform all the tasks listed above at the highest level. In addition, a laboratory manager will be required to have the critical thinking skills pertaining to the optimization of assays, mentoring abilities towards undergraduate and junior graduate students, active participation in study design, execution, analysis, and presentation of scientific data.
