Job Summary

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Utah is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Research Scientist to join our team within the Johnson and Hoareau lab. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge translational research in the fields of trauma, cardiac arrest, and stroke. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in managing large animal translational experiments across the shared laboratory developing new devices and therapeutics.

Responsibilities

● Manage and oversee the execution of large animal translational experiments in accordance with study protocols and research objectives.

● Collaborate closely with principal investigators to develop and implement experimental designs, ensuring the successful execution of projects.

● Coordinate and communicate with research staff, animal care personnel, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the smooth progression of studies.

● Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data, and prepare detailed reports and presentations for dissemination.

● Contribute to the development of research proposals, grant applications, and scientific publications.

● Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in translational research and animal models related to trauma, cardiac arrest, and stroke.

● Ensure compliance with ethical and regulatory guidelines pertaining to animal research.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and 4 – 6 years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of assigned department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.

Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Preferences

● A master’s degree or Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., biomedical sciences, physiology, pharmacology, veterinary medicine, or a related discipline).

● Proven experience in translational research, preferably with a focus on large animal models.

● Strong knowledge of experimental design, data analysis, and statistical methods.

● Proficiency in conducting research involving large animals, including surgical procedures, monitoring techniques, and data collection.

● Familiarity with the principles and guidelines of laboratory animal care and ethical considerations.

● Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet project deadlines.

● Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

● Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills. Publication record in peer-reviewed journals is highly desirable.
