The School of Dentistry is seeking outstanding scholars from a variety of clinical and population oral health-related backgrounds, including epidemiology, health services research, health policy, dental public health, dental informatics, implementation science, and/or behavioral health, to contribute to our growing research mission. Applicants must hold a relevant doctoral degree with a proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Multidisciplinary and collaborative research is strongly encouraged and supported. The successful faculty candidate will be a skilled clinician scientist or scholar in the population health sciences with demonstrated capability for leading and sustaining an independent program of research. The appointee will be expected to devote the majority of their time to the development and oversight of an extramurally-funded research program focused on one or more of the above-described areas. As is appropriate and/or needed, the appointee will also contribute to didactic instruction in epidemiology, health services research, care outcomes research, dental public health and related fields for predoctoral students and dental residents.

The School of Dentistry and the State of Utah offer unique opportunities for the advancement of science in the broad area of population oral health, including unparalleled opportunities to study oral health disparities and inequities, the integration of medicine and dentistry, practice-based research, dental informatics, and oral health policy. We abide by and prioritize the institutional ethos of serving the underserved. To this end, the University of Utah School of Dentistry serves as the designated provider of Medicaid-eligible adult dental benefits (250,000) with support from a large group of community-based and private practice dental clinics (400+ providers). Many Utah communities, particularly Native American/Alaskan Native, Black/African American, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and Hispanic/Latino communities are medically disadvantaged, with indicators of worse health and less insurance/ability to pay for healthcare than the White population, underscoring the importance of University of Utah Health Sciences Campus’ (UHealth) efforts in the areas of community engagement and health equity, supported by the Utah CTSI .

Across our eight fixed-site clinics, we serve more than 40,000 unique patients annually, the large majority of whom are Medicaid beneficiaries. A significant portion are dentally uninsured, for whom we support the costs of care through a philanthropic Oral Health Assistance Program (>$500k annually). Several of our clinics, including thePopulation Health Center, are operationally integrated with the delivery of medical and behavioral health care services, allowing our faculty and students to work alongside and in collaboration with our medical colleagues to improve whole person health.

The University of Utah Health Sciences Campus is highly collaborative. The School of Dentistry has ongoing research-related engagements with several departments in the School of Medicine, includingPopulation Health SciencesandBiomedical Informatics, with theCollege of Nursing, and with the Departments ofMaterials Science and EngineeringandBiomedical Engineering. We also have relationships with the Veterans Affairs Salt Lake City Healthcare System.

The School of Dentistry has dedicated space and resources available to support research activity. The Office of Research, led by Dr. Brenda Heaton, Associate Dean for Research, is supported by a $20 million endowment which was established with the express intent to support the growth of research activity aligned with our strategic goals of improving care outcomes, reducing oral health inequities, and influencing oral health policy.

Beyond our competitive salary, the University’s and School of Dentistry’s benefits program is tremendous, including: health care, prescription drug, behavioral health, dental, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, retirement plans, supplemental retirement plans, retiree benefits, accidental death & dismemberment, disability, life insurances, long-term care, home and auto insurance, legal plans, military benefits, and large tuition benefits for you and family (see more details here:www.benefits.utah.edu/).
