State of Utah - Jobs Elementary Literacy Specialist in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) is looking for an experienced instructional educator to fill an Elementary Literacy Specialist position who will work with a team of specialist to support improving literacy outcomes and build the capacity of K-3 educators in our lowest performing schools.

Principal Duties As an Elementary Literacy Specialist you will:

  • Provide leadership as a statewide expert in the development and implementation of the science of reading for elementary schools statewide.
  • Plan,develop,promote,implement,and evaluate district & charter literacy programs.
  • Complete reports for schools,the USBE,and the Legislature as required and interpret,clarify,explain,and apply USBE policy and procedures,business practices,federal or state laws and regulations,etc.
  • Supervise the work of the early literacy coaches through mentorship,professional learning,and job-embedded coaching support.
  • Facilitate a professional learning community for the early literacy coaches.
  • Use principles of adult learning to support the work to help coaches effectively partner with educators to integrate professional learning into classroom practice.
  • Collaboratively review and adjust coaching placements as necessary,based on the school's literacy achievement performance on an annual basis.
  • Leverage knowledge of the science of reading and evidence-based practices to support coaches in helping teachers maximize student learning.
  • Partner with the school's leadership to support school-wide literacy goals to provide a team of support for educators to embed the state-wide goals into instructional plans and practice.
  • Deliver consistent and frequent job-embedded professional learning for districts and charter schools throughout the state.
  • Collaborate with colleges,universities,and other education institutions to improve the pre-service and in-service education of teachers,administrators,and other school personnel.
  • Design and facilitate relevant and cohesive professional learning sessions to strengthen the implementation of these evidence-based practices with educators.
  • Facilitate meetings with small and large decision-making groups.
  • Travel to various locations in and out of state for professional learning and/or professional meetings.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will possess the following preferred qualifications:

  • A Utah Professional Educator or Administrator License.
  • A master s degree in elementary education,reading,administration,or related field.
  • Experience in teaching grades K-3 with literacy instruction,intervention programs,and assessments.
  • At least 3 years of instructional coaching,leadership,or equivalent experience (e.g. district level experience).
  • LETRS Certified or has completed LETRS 3rd edition. 
  • Experience in providing professional learning to adults in small and large groups.
  • Extensive data analysis experience with Acadience Reading.
  • A USBE Instructional Coaching Endorsement.
  • Strong professional learning facilitation skills.
  • Effective coaching skills including- relationship building,understanding of adult learning principles,and the process of engaging educators in job-embedded professional learning.
