Job Summary

The University of Utah Campus Store is seeking an Accountant who will work directly under the Assoc. Director of Finance to maintain and administer accounts receivable records and files, process credit card payments, prepare daily financial reports, and facilitate collections from a variety of organizations/departments as necessary for the University Campus Store’s multiple locations. This position requires the ability to apply generally accepted accounting principles ( GAAP ) and is expected to recommend changes to accounting-based procedures based upon analysis performed and specialized knowledge.

Under the direction of the Assoc. Director of Finance, this position is responsible for providing customer service to sponsored students with special needs, maintaining Campus Store accounts receivables including statement generation and posting of payments for departments and organizations, reconciling assigned general ledger accounts, run a variety of reports, and analyze the data per GAAP guidelines. Applicants must be a self-starter in learning native accounting systems with a strong background in excel. This position will supervise up to one full-time Assoc. Accountant and two part-time interns and is part of a multifaceted team consisting of up to ten full and part-time staff members.

Responsibilities

  • Processes invoices for payment, ensuring billed amount and quantity received corresponds to purchase order.

  • Prepares invoices and bills.

  • Maintains and reconciles specific accounts and adjusts via journal entry as necessary.

  • Prepare and post journal entries as assigned.

  • Reviews, deposits, and posts payments, scholarships and other transactions to accounting systems. Prepares check requests.

  • Ensures transactions are posted correctly to accounts and reviews transactions for accuracy and required back-up documentation.

  • Responds to a variety of accounting-related questions, such as inquiries from vendors on invoice status and from students on financial aid status.

  • Assists with preparation of various accounting and financial reports.

  • Assists with month-end close

  • Assists with year-end close

  • Supervises, reviews work of and provides training to the cash room Assoc. Accountant and student interns.

  • Ensures separation of duties and dual controls when handling special cash needs.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field, plus one year related experience or equivalency (two years of related work experience can be substituted for one year of education) required. A thorough understanding of general ledger accounting practices, cost analysis and accounting principles, as well as demonstrated analytical, problem solving, human relations and effective communication skills also required.

Knowledge of PeopleSoft or Access databases may be preferred in some areas.
