Become a Resource Optimization Senior Advisor at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you will be part of the Resource Optimization team within the Trading and Market Operations group, where you will apply your strategic, technical, analytical and communication skills to optimize the value of SCE’s generation resources.

SCE’s portfolio is expanding with new technology types like energy storage, hybrid solar storage, and distributed energy resources and we need you to help get the most value out of those resources. The Resource Optimization Senior Advisor will leverage their deep understanding of the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) energy markets to help integrate and maximize the value of new resources into SCE’s portfolio, lead regulatory filings and advocate on behalf of our customers in CAISO stakeholder processes.

  • Lead efforts to develop and execute bidding strategies for SCE’s energy resources, and perform market analysis to increase value to customers and support reliability

  • Integrate new technologies such as energy storage, Vehicle to Grid (V2G), Virtual Power Plant, and solar storage into the market

  • Develop and improve dispatch optimization models, analytical tools, and methodologies

  • Lead and develop energy market analysis using data science and other techniques to enhance processes and strategies

  • Lead SCE’s regulatory filings, including annual and monthly reports to demonstrate least cost dispatch requirements

  • Analyze the impact of current and future market designs on SCE’s energy procurement and asset optimization activities, provide feedback and future design recommendations and advocate for market improvements through direct communication with external parties (e.g. CAISO, CPUC) and in CAISO’s stakeholder processes; Lead CAISO market implementations

  • Lead the onboarding of new generation resources into SCE’s portfolio and ensure all operating characteristics are represented accurately

  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external partners

  • Lead/project manage cross functional projects and initiatives

  • Coach, mentor and provide guidance for junior teammates

  • Develop and implement internal processes and controls to ensure compliance with all regulatory and internal requirements

  • Identify risks, develop mitigation plans and recommend process and/or strategy improvements to reduce and eliminate identified risks

  • Support strategic and other ad-hoc projects

The Essentials

  • Ten (10) or more years of experience in energy or related quantitative field, including experience with data science, statistical, econometric, or financial modeling

  • Five (5) years of experience in organized energy markets

  • Experience building, analyzing, and maintaining complex quantitative models

  • Experience in bidding strategy development and optimization; strategic planning and/or analysis of energy market generation portfolios in deregulated wholesale power markets

  • Experience with dispatch optimization tools such as Plexos, RO, GenTrader, SmartBidder, etc.

  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint

The Preferred

  • Seven (7) years of experience in organized energy markets

  • Degree in Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, Finance, Statistics, Data Science or a related quantitative field

  • Expertise in the CAISO market structure and deep understanding of California energy policy

  • Experience in quantitative analytics related to power procurement, power systems operations, and/or wholesale power market operations, particularly in California

  • Advanced proficiency with tools such as Excel, PowerBI, Python, Azure, R, database and statistical modeling tools

  • Expertise in financial modeling, cost-benefit analysis and/or valuation

  • Expertise in After-the-Fact analysis and evaluation of bidding strategies and market (asset optimization) results.

  • Experience preparing findings and presenting complex technical information to technical and non-technical audiences

  • This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage.
