THE POSITION

Douglas County Public Works - Fleet Division

Full time position available with competitive full-family benefit package, PERS/OPSRP retirement and availability of deferred compensation retirement savings.

Onsite (Courthouse complex) childcare available at a discounted employee rate through Roseburg Professional Childcare (Fowler St. location only). Availability is subject to center waitlist.

This position is eligible for representation by the TEAMSTERS LOCAL UNION No. 223

This position performs duties in areas of highly skilled diagnostics, repairs and preventative maintenance work on a wide variety of automotive, construction and maintenance equipment.

Essential Functions:

This is not an exhaustive or all-inclusive list of responsibilities, skills, duties or functions associated with the job.

  • Adjust, repair and perform preventative maintenance on a wide variety of equipment and attachments. Includes: gasoline, diesel, hydraulic, electric or air-powered equipment.

  • Inspect equipment for malfunctions, wear or damage; independently determine to hold equipment or return to service; notify fleet coordinator or findings. Provide written or oral explanation, if requested. Identify cause of defects and perform precision and timely repairs and/or adjustments. Diagnose equipment for malfunctions utilizing electronic diagnostic tools. Use electronic tools to set or change parameters on on-board computers; print equipment analysis reports.

  • Determine parts and materials needed for preventative maintenance or repairs. Order through fleet services parts section using properly completed forms. When parts section is unattended, obtain parts and materials from stock on-hand or order from vendors; complete forms.

  • Operate and test equipment and attachments for proper operation when maintenance, repairs or adjustments completed.

  • Perform basic wire, stick, torch or spot welding on equipment and attachments. Fabricate, replace and modify steel, plastic, aluminum and fiberglass parts on various equipment.

  • Create work orders on equipment and maintain accurate records using automated system utilizing proper task codes. Accurately record comments regarding work or condition of equipment. Research equipment files to determine prior maintenance and repair history. Provide information to fleet coordinator and customer as required.

  • Operate in a safe and efficient manner, various hand, air and specialty tools, machinery, equipment and personal protection equipment. Inspect, maintain and repair tools, equipment and machinery as necessary.

  • Maintain clean and organized work area. Assist in building, grounds or facility maintenance, including locking and unlocking facilities as needed. Participate and assist in reduction of operational costs through efficient and reasonable usage of utilities and supplies.

  • Utilize training, other agencies, vendors, manufacturers and trade publications as resources to stay up-to-date on technical procedures and materials.

  • Provide technical aid and training to other technicians as required.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities required, will be considered. however, the following is preferred

  • Four years progressive experience diagnosing, inspecting, repairing and maintenance of equipment which includes mechanical and electrical repair to gasoline, diesel, hydraulic, electrical and air-powered equipment and attachments.

Desirable Qualifications:Automotive Service Excellence certificates or factory training certificates; welding and fabricating experience.

Required:

  • Oregon Class A Commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement

  • Regular and consistent attendance

Work is performed at the fleet service maintenance facility and, at times, throughout the County at maintenance districts, landfill and transfer sites and fuel sites. Physical demands include bending, climbing, hearing alarms and voice conversations, gripping with hands, kneeling, lifting up to 75 pounds, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, twisting, walking and working with hazardous chemicals and materials. Work is performed in an environment, which involves everyday risks or discomforts and sometime adverse weather conditions requiring safety precautions. A reasonable amount of driving is required.

Driving Record: A current copy of your Court Print Driving Record must be attached to your application in order to be considered for this position. A Court Print Driving Record is obtained from the DMV and may take 5 - 7 days for delivery, longer for out-of-state. Finalist(s) for this position will be made an offer of employment, contingent upon review and approval of driving record. An unacceptable driving record for employment is defined in theDouglas County Driver Policy Standard Operation of Vehicles #5 (http://www.co.douglas.or.us/hr/Risk/safety/driving.asp) .

SCREENING & EVALUATION

While not part of initial applicant screening, the finalist for this position may be required to pass acriminal history backgroundcheckas part of a contingent offer of employment.

Employment is contingent upon a pre-employment drug screen. Presence of non-prescribed drugs, including marijuana, on drug screen results will result in disqualification pursuant to the County's drug and alcohol policy. To determine if physically qualified to perform the essential functions, employment offer is conditional upon satisfactory results of a post-offer medical and hearing exam conducted at county expense.
