University of Rochester Research Specialist I in Rochester, New York

Responsibilities

Position Summary :

The candidate will provide direct research and teaching support at the professional level. This person will act as the primary laboratory research coordinator for the faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students in the lab. The purposes of the position are to manage laboratory operations, including execution of sophisticated research investigations in the field of cognitive neuroscience – collection and analysis of electroencepholgraphy (EEG) data and/or MRI data collection and analysis. In addition the candidate will maintain the lab within compliance of law and university policies, and to train students and staff in the use of sophisticated equipment and complex experimental protocols. Flexibility in scheduling may be necessary as this position may involve travel (nationally and internationally) to external sites to provide EEG training and data acquisition support for ongoing clinical trials.

Typical Duties :

  • Independently manages and maintains the lab equipment and the resources of the laboratory. Operates and ensures proper working order of experimental testing equipment, including but not limited to neurophysiology acquisition systems; maintains computing capabilities within the lab. Works with appropriate IT staff to manage equipment and software upgrades, and maintains lab computing facilities within compliance of university security policies.

  • Oversees the establishment and operation of the laboratory; teaches staff and students the use of sophisticated laboratory techniques and the use of equipment and complex experimental procedures assists with technical problems; orients new students and staff to the lab; ensures that all lab personnel complete necessary training; ensure Quality Control (QC) on all IRB consent documentation and consenting processes; maintains stock of related consumables as well as manages lab resources. Orders supplies and equipment in conjunction with other lab personnel maintain the order and cleanliness of the lab. Troubleshoots equipment.

  • Under broad guidance and exercising independent technical judgment, performs sophisticated experiments with human subjects collecting neurophysiologic data (EEG and/or MRI).

  • Collaborates on design of experiments, facilitates development and adaptation of specific experimental protocolsfor a number of experiment types, and maintains the documentation for future use.

  • Maintains accurate records of all subjects and experiments; prepares tables and reports for University entities and external granting agencies.

  • Keeps abreast of the field of neuroscience by reading journal articles, attending laboratory meetings, and attending relevant University seminars. Contributes to preparing publications, presentation, and proposals related to laboratory research; searches literature for relevant material, drafts experimental procedures and results.

Other projects and job duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree with major course work in the field of assignment required.

  • 1 year of related work experience involving direct assistance to researchers, or equivalent combination of experience, training, and education required.

  • Experience with human neurophysiology and/or imaging methods preferred as well as experience in training others in the use of complex equipment preferred.

  • Experience with MATLAB/Python or other programming language preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including written communication required.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills required.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $46,987 - $65,790 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
