Scope of Job

We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s student body as an Assistant Professor of Public Affairs and Security Studies for the School of Interdisciplinary Programs & Community Engagement beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year.

The successful applicant will contribute primarily to SIPCE’s Public Affairs and Security Studies ( PASS ) Program through research, teaching, and service. This position will help sustain and contribute to the program’s growth. Depending on the successful applicant’s secondary expertise, this position could also serve a number of SIPCE’s other programs.

Preferred areas of expertise include but are not limited to: public affairs, global security, human security, intelligence studies, global studies, international studies, international affairs, peace and conflict studies, with secondary expertise in security issues related to transboundary crisis management, community resilience, migration, human trafficking, sexualized violence, displacement and diaspora, human rights, social justice, environmental studies, environmental security, cyber security, digitalization and digital government, intelligence and counterintelligence.

Candidates at the rank of assistant professor must demonstrate potential for independent research and high-quality scholarship in peer-reviewed venues. This position should connect to the research agendas and strength of individual faculty members and programs in SIPCE . Areas include global security and intelligence, community resilience, global and national politics, political leadership, environmental policy, FEW nexus etc..

Department/College Background:

The School of Interdisciplinary Programs and Community Engagement ( SIPCE ) houses several degree programs that include Public Affairs and Security Studies, Mexican American Studies, Environmental Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, Medical Humanities, Multidisciplinary Studies, Human Dimensions of Organizations, and Public Heritage and Community Engagement.

Within SIPCE , the mission of the Program of Public Affairs and Security Studies ( PASS ) is to provide exceptional educational opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate students in the Rio Grande Valley. Through rigorous academic programming, PASS aims to equip its graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively serve their communities, the state of Texas, and the broader United States. The curriculum emphasizes key areas such as public sector administration, public policy, and homeland security, ensuring that students are well-prepared to address contemporary challenges in these fields. By fostering a commitment to public service and community engagement, PASS strives to cultivate leaders who will contribute positively to society and enhance the quality of governance and security at local, state, and national levels.

Minimum Qualifications

To be appointed at the rank of Assistant professor, the successful candidate must have a PhD (from an accredited university) in public affairs, public administration, national security, intelligence, governance or closely related field such as policy & the law, international relations & policy, political science, etc, with 18 graduate hours in global security, national security, public administration or intelligence studies.

ABDs will be considered, but a conferred doctorate by August 31st, 2025 is required for appointment.

The successful applicant will

· have a track-record of high-quality, innovative research and scholarship, evidenced by conference presentations and (forthcoming) publications in reputable, peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes that contribute to the fields of global security, public administration, intelligence or related disciplines.

· be dedicated to teaching excellence and possess teaching experience at the university level that includes a combination of different modalities (e.g. face-to-face, hybrid, online).

· have demonstrated familiarity with interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary academic environments.

· demonstrate cultural intelligence, which is increasingly recognized as a vital competency in today’s globalized context.

· be interested in contributing to UTRGV’s movement to become a bicultural, bilingual, and biliterate Hispanic-serving Institution.

Additional Information

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
