Microsoft Corporation Principal Firmware Engineer in Portland, Oregon

Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. Our focus is on smart growth, high efficiency, and delivering a trusted experience to customers and partners worldwide and we are looking for a Principal Firmware Engineer to help achieve that mission.

The Azure Firmware Center of Excellence team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational success for Azure that exceeds our customer’s expectations. Our technology and innovations are globally available foundation of Azure Control plane that hosts services with the scale of Azure Compute / Bing / Skype / Azure Store / SQL, host millions of multiplayer gaming sessions and large-scale computational solutions.

Our teams are responsible for Firmware development of server, silicon and rack infrastructure design with a focus on innovation for Azure infrastructure for Microsoft and their customers.

We are looking for a Principal Firmware Engineer to join the team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead architecture, design and deployment of cloud scale Software and Firmware solutions that adapt to changing requirements over their lifetime. 

  • Collaborate with hardware and software teams to define, architect and spec highly scalable and reliable solutions for cloud scale workloads. 

  • Mentor a team of developers to architect and prototype solutions, using industry standard development flows, transitioning these to production-quality cloud-scale solutions.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 12+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 10+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 7+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience.

  • 8+ years of experience designing and developing firmware, Reliability, Availability and Serviceability(RAS) and software solutions for Enterprise/Cloud Server hardware.

  • 5+ years of experience in C, Python Programming.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in Computer Architecture, embedded systems, and design develop and validation principles.

  • Experience designing and developing Firmware and software solutions to improve System Reliability, Availability and Serviceability(RAS).

  • Technical Leader in Industry with experience in Enterprise/Cloud Server hardware architecture, Familiarity Industry standard specifications i.e.,Peripheral Component Interconnect Express(PCIe), Advanced Configuration and Power Interface(ACPI) and Redfish.

  • Experienced in leading debugging complex system level issues and providing recommendations on potential fixes/tradeoffs to meet the business needs.

  • Enjoys new technological challenges and able to deal with ambiguity.

  • Effective technical communication skills (verbal and written) to interface with cross-functional technical teams within and/or outside of the organization.

Hardware Engineering IC6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $158,500 - $276,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $202,800 - $304,200 per year.
