Description

This role is a hands-on technical leadership role that will own the engineering and design of American Express mainframe infrastructure hosting critical global applications with a focus on physical and virtual networking and recovery / resiliency technologies. In this role you will lead engineering and networking design components across zOS, z Linux, zVM and GDPS (Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex). You will assist the Mainframe organization in crafting new networks to support capabilities like zCX (Container Extensions) and Kubernetes / Docker containers. The Staff Engineer will report directly to the Mainframe Systems Vice President of Engineering and Architecture. Together we will cultivate the improvement of our Mainframe Products and capabilities to help American Express stand behind our members.

Responsibilities:

  • Interface on key network design tenants for both physical and logical connectivity using TCP/IP and SNA protocols

  • Partner closely with Core Infrastructure Network teams, to facilitate the optimum deployment of Mainframe Network capabilities

  • Design recovery and resiliency scenarios supporting highly available environments in different regions applying specialized technology solutions bringing to bear industry leading automation

  • Partner with platform security and encryption teams to facilitate protection of mainframe resources and assets

  • Provide monitoring and automation of key network performance indicators to mitigate potential incidents before they impact the customer

  • Lead all aspects of key design implementations conducted by vendor partners for networking and security capabilities

  • Using past experiences combined with new technology advances to provide design alternatives, ask probing questions and support the team in incident resolution

  • Assist with engineering of large/intricate projects with a variety of components and integration points

  • Champion a modernization approach across the core infrastructure and application stack

  • Lead introduction of new capability through facilitating partnership and alignment between multi-functional teams including engagement through analysis, proof of concept, build and ultimately delivery to operations

  • Influence Infrastructure and Application Engineers and Architects to exploit new mainframe capabilities such as, Java, Swift, Go, CI / CD pipelines, Rest API, Encryption, Sysplex, Hybrid Cloud and Active/Active configurations

  • You encourage Engineers to define solution requirements, perform coding and/or hands-on implementation

  • Lead and participate in brainstorming and discovery exercises to settle new technologies based on research, proof of concept efforts and independent investigation

  • You ensure engineering is consistent with engineering standards, guidelines and principles

  • You apply your expertise in creative ways to help team members overcome problems during production outages and solution delivery

  • Collaborative work attitude to flourish with peer support and taking pride in products and capabilities delivered as a team

  • Ensures compliance with engineering, architectural, regulatory, and strategic standards, policies, and procedures

  • Routinely mentoring and developing engineers on related domain expertise

  • Challenging status quo, demonstrate risk taking, and implement creative ideas

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 10 years engineering experience in a global mainframe environment in the Financial Services industry

  • Experience with design and implementation of mainframe and distributed applications

  • Experience with mainframe infrastructure, z-platform and z/OS technologies hardware and operating systems, application development and control of mainframe architecture, middleware and tooling

  • Progressive knowledge and experience with modern mainframe technologies such, Encryption, Hybrid Cloud, Sysplex, High Availability, Resiliency and Networking.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with in depth problem solving, analytical analysis, reporting and presentation to senior leaders and key partners

  • Strong industry knowledge of the newest technologies and its relevance to the American Express environment

  • Deep subject matter domain expertise and knowledge of application processes and business flows

  • Ability to lead, influence and drive vendor direction to deliver innovated solutions that are advantageous to American Express

  • Tried outstanding personal integrity and ability to build trust and collaborate across an organization

  • Ability to understand business requirements and turn them into technical requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the English language

  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills

  • Tried experience attracting, hiring, retaining and leading top engineering and architect talent and forming teams

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Science Engineering, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.

Qualifications

Salary Range: $170,000.00 to $255,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
