The Linux Infrastructure Services (LIS) group at the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) is seeking a Sr. HPC Systems Administrator / HPC Systems Architect who has a passion for challenging problem-solving and expertise in high performance computing. Under the direction of the HPC team leadership, help us keep all of our research clusters running smoothly. Help build clusters in our datacenters and in the cloud with cutting-edge technology.

Duties/Job Responsibilities:

Sr. Systems Administrator:

The Sr. Systems Administrator will work on highly complex physical and cloud linux systems. This position will also assist with our enterprise application, database, web servers, and associated cloud services. The selected candidate will work with the HPC team leadership to help build and maintain high performance computing solutions in our datacenters and in the cloud. The candidate will work with researchers to understand how HPC can enable and reshape their work. The candidate will also zealously pursue fast and collaborative solutions to requests, partnering with both faculty and local computing support providers throughout the school. The systems that our group manages often represent investments in excess $500k of grant funding for very high-profile projects.

Work related tasks include: performing linux systems deployments & programming; managing HPC job scheduling; performing software installs; reviewing and managing systems monitoring; performing systems maintenance; performing software installations; managing backups; coordinating hardware repairs; coordinating ordering & installation of parts and equipment; recommending and tracking changes to software & hardware; automating systems tasks and deployments; performing technical consulting & end user linux support; supporting web services; responding to and assisting first-tier support staff who assist end-users with our systems; maintaining expert level knowledge of HPC technologies; and proposing improvements to existing services. This position also participates in the LIS on-call rotation.

Systems Architect:

In addition to the above resposibilities the Systems Architect will perform the following: design, quote, purchase, deploy, and coordinate maintenance of high-performance computing systems; work with electricians to fulfill the power requirements of current and future equipment that we manage; work directly with faculty members to understand their research and work with external technology vendors to deliver systems tailored to meet specific research needs within the budget allocations; and establish standards, methods, and best practices for all phases of physical and cloud HPC deployments to ensure the highest level of availability and services to our faculty and their labs.

Qualifications:

Sr. Systems Administrator: Bachelors degree and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Systems Architect: Bachelors degree and 4 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

The successful candidate for the Sr. Systems Administrator position has advanced linux systems programming skills, a working knowledge of job queueing systems, and a working knowledge of other technologies such as those listed below. The Systems Architect will in addition have experience designing, deploying, and managing successful HPC projects, and have some experience supervising small teams.

The candidate will work collaboratively with faculty, graduate students, research staff, and their SAS Computing colleagues. They are passionate about the research and academic mission of SAS; they are ready to make a difference through teamwork, ingenuity, and the power of open source.

They can manage and track a large number of ongoing projects simultaneously, working with their teammates to triage problems and execute solutions, and maintain communication with customers as needed.

Experience with Linux OSes (CentOS/Ubuntu), BASH, Python, Cloud Services (AWS), SLURM, HPC resource management, storage and backup management, Configuration Management (Salt/Ansible), Version Control (git), and Server/Storage hardware deployments is strongly preferred.

Experience in Azure, Sun Grid Engine (SGE), datacenter rack planning, linux tools programming, yum/apt package creation, MPI, and Infiniband are a plus.
