Job Overview:

The Senior Payroll Specialist uses best practices and knowledge of internal or external issues to improve the payroll discipline within McDermott. They will act as a resource for colleagues with less experience and share their conceptual and practical expertise related to the payroll discipline. The Senior Payroll Specialist solves complex problems and uses discipline-specific knowledge to improve their products or services. The Senior Payroll Specialist impacts a range of customer, operational, project, or service activities with the payroll team and other related teams and ensures that they work within the appropriate guidelines and policies.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the execution of Payroll activities assigned to the team, including the processing of payroll, employee and statutory payments, payroll-related accounting, reporting, and compliance

  • Oversee and update payroll documentation

  • Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of payroll disbursements

  • Ensure that all payroll activities adhere to relevant labor laws, tax regulations, and company policies

  • Review and verify payroll data, conduct regular audits, and reconcile any discrepancies

  • Address and resolve complex payroll issues or discrepancies

  • Identify areas for process optimization and implement best practices to streamline payroll operations

  • Troubleshoot and recommend alternatives to resolve conflicts between business processes, business requirements, and standard system functionality

  • Lead or facilitate meetings as necessary

  • Payroll tax reconciliation

  • Liaise with and assist other departments as required

  • Prepare special payroll reports as needed

  • Perform testing as needed, particularly for tax updates

  • Assist all payroll processes as needed

Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field

  • Minimum of 10 years experience with end-to-end payroll process knowledge

  • Experience in overseeing small teams of 3-5 members is preferable

  • Ability to multi-task, critical thinking ability

  • Ability to meet multiple deadlines and work in a fast-paced environment; team contributor, good communication skills -- verbal and written

  • Testing experience required

  • Ability to troubleshoot and recommend alternatives to resolve conflicts between business processes, business requirements, and standard system functionality

  • A demonstrated process improvement mindset and experience in driving process improvements

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Efficient time management capabilities

  • Effective communication skills and the ability to professionally interface with employees, management, and other regarding payroll inquiries

  • Ability to handle sensitive employee data with a high level of confidentiality
