Work Schedule: 8 Hr (7:30 AM - 4:30 PM)

Summary:

Supervises the operation of the laboratory of the Sleep Disorder Center, coordinating its diverse and multifaceted clinical and research endeavors under the direction of the Operations Manager and Medical Director of the Sleep Center. Has 24 accountability for laboratory functioning. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:

• Make confirmation call to patients per site-specific procedure when required by center.

• Review information in patient record to include chief sleep/wake complaint and order for study.

• Greet patient upon arrival and escort him/her to sleep room. Educate patient on all procedures, answering any questions. Obtain information needed to complete the pre-test paperwork.

• Set up and calibrate monitoring equipment. Select appropriate recording montage.

• Apply electrodes and other recording devices to patient and verify their proper function.

• Perform pre-test calibrations, making any necessary adjustments to equipment.

• Institute "lights out" and document patient data.

• Monitor the polysomnogram, obtaining a high quality recording.

• Recognize and document clinical and physiological events pertinent to the study.

• Communicate information on patient status to referring physician/medical director as needed.

• Recognize and document all artifacts and equipment malfunctions, taking the proper steps to eliminate them. Report any equipment malfunctions to direct supervisor.

• Assist patient with needs during procedure in order to obtain the required data.

• Understand indications, contraindications and adverse effects of continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure as well as oxygen administration.

• Apply and titrate positive airway pressure and oxygen therapy based on physician order and in accordance with established policies and procedures.

• Wake patient and record post-test calibrations.

• Gently remove all electrodes and transducers from patient and allow time for cleanup. Have patient complete post-test paperwork. Discharge patient.

• Perform confirmation call and leave shift report with appropriate contacts.

• Inventory and order equipment/supplies per policy.

• Review and analyze diagnostic and treatment test data.

• Recognize and respond appropriately and quickly to patient physiologic events.

• Conduct and score Multiple Sleep Latency and Maintenance of Wakefulness tests.

• Conduct and score infant/pediatric tests.

• Conduct in-lab seizure monitoring.

• Assess patient volume and backlog at assigned sleep laboratories to determine staffing needs.

• Maintain staff coverage when patient volume increases, Sleep Technologists are absent or as otherwise needed to ensure patient’s needs are met and service is uninterrupted.

• Recruit new Sleep Technologists for assigned lab sites as needed. This includes running ads, fielding candidate calls, reviewing resumes/applications, interviewing candidates and completing hiring process.

• Maintain Sleep Technologist files with updated health work, licensure, orientation/training/continuing education paperwork, Scorer’s Reports, Performance Evaluations and all communications such as memos and PTO Request forms. Forward appropriate copies to Personnel for filing.

• Conduct 90-day and annual job performance evaluations for all direct reports on a timely basis.

• Perform other supervisory duties as required, such as being available after normal business hours to answer questions and resolve issues.

Required Job Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree

• Two years of experience or five years’ experience in a Sleep Disorder Center or equivalent.

• Ability to develop rapport with a diverse set of individuals and departments.

• Demonstrated problem-solving skills with a solution-orientation.

• Ability to work both independently and in team settings.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Highly ethical, professional individual.
