UL, LLC Manager, Technical Accounting in Northbrook, Illinois

This role is hybrid on-site (3) days a week at our Northbrook, IL office

Reporting to the Director, Technical Accounting, the Manager, Technical Accounting is responsible for conducting research and documenting conclusions on complex accounting transactions to inform management decision making. In this role, you will be engaged to support the accounting for various transactions and business activities, including acquisitions and divestitures, to ensure the Company arrives at the correct accounting conclusions.

This is a high-visibility role, operating in a fast-paced, dynamic environment requiring the ability to adapt quickly and provide timely information to management for analysis and decision-making. The ability to collaborate effectively with internal cross-functional teams and external specialists will be critical to success in this role.

  • Evaluates accounting treatment of complex transactions by reviewing contracts, performing accounting research and preparing accounting memos, where applicable

  • Owns purchase accounting related to new acquisitions, including valuation of intangible assets and goodwill, as well as accounting considerations related to divestitures

  • Supports various teams, both within and outside of the Controllership organization, with application of the Company’s accounting policies

  • Develops and leads internal trainings to educate participants on accounting policies and upskill the organization on US GAAP accounting standards

  • Leads the Company’s efforts to adopt new accounting standards and guidelines, including ESG and climate change reporting requirements

  • Builds relationships and collaborates with other functional areas as needed, including corporate accounting, business leads, FP&A, legal, IT and human resources

  • Provides assistance to external auditors as needed throughout the year

  • Identifies opportunities for continuous improvement in areas of responsibility

  • Leads or is a key participant in special projects, as required

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting required

  • US CPA required

  • 5+ years of directly related experience, preferably at a big four accounting firm. Multinational company experience is strongly desired

  • Must have an excellent degree of technical knowledge of US GAAP, SEC reporting requirements and internal controls over financial reporting (SOX) and personal interest with respect to matters of accounting so as to be able to function as a resident technical accounting and control expert

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills to clearly present key topics to executive leadership (including Director, Technical Accounting and Chief Accounting Officer)

  • Must have the ability to work independently and be self-motivated, as well as a collaborative team player

  • Must be highly organized, accurate and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage numerous deliverables simultaneously with a sense of urgency

  • Strong proficiency in Excel is a plus
