Job Description

We are seeking a mass spectrometry-based proteomics scientist to join the Chemical Biology and Mass Spectrometry Technologies team in the Technology and Therapeutic Platforms department with a focus on working with therapeutic area biologists to discover new drug targets and inform drug mechanism-of-action studies. This scientist will collaborate strongly with chemical biologists to characterize off targets. The successful candidate will have demonstrated success: 1) preparing samples from cells or tissues for expression proteomics, phosphoproteomics, and interaction proteomics experiments using either data independent acquisition or tandem mass tag approaches, 2) operating and maintaining nano-LC’s and tandem mass spectrometry systems, 3) processing data with MaxQuant, Spectronaut, and DIANN, or equivalent software, and 4) utilizing R-scripting and visualization tools to empower collaborators to interpret proteomics datasets. Critical is the ability to clearly communicate their work with scientists from diverse backgrounds and design follow-up experiments for hypothesis testing to grow the drug discovery pipeline. The successful candidate will provide key contributions to advance AbbVie’s therapeutic area programs, contribute to the development of novel therapeutic modalities, and innovate and expand the capabilities of the proteomics platform.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualize, plan, and execute, all facets of a proteomics experiments to identify new drug targets or understand mechanism of action

  • Operate and maintain nano LC equipment (various vendors) and current models of Thermo and Bruker mass spectrometers

  • Prepare samples from cells and tissues for proteomics

  • Propose and evaluate novel methods and technologies to prepare samples from limited amounts of cells / tissue and utilize automation to process samples in 96-well plates

  • Interface and collaborate with colleagues and project teams in therapeutic areas to determine appropriate proteomics approaches to best address project needs.

  • Engage in external collaborations where opportunities align with team mission.

  • Maintain good written records of laboratory procedures and communicate research findings in cross-functional project team meetings, external conferences, and publications.

  • Mentor and enable the growth of team members
