Job Description

AbbVie’s Genomics Research Center (GRC) is a center of excellence for genetics and genomics that supports the R&D pipeline from Discovery through Development. The GRC goal is to develop world class genetics and genomics research focused on finding the right therapeutic targets, helping AbbVie scientists better understand human disease biology, understanding the behavior and response to our drugs in clinical trials, and improving production of our biological drugs.

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Senior Scientist I in Cell Biology of mammalian production cells (CHO). This position will apply various functional genomics, cell biology and systems biology approaches to increase our understanding of the complex cellular processes of CHO cells, in order to improve production and product quality of Biologics. Strong communication and teamwork skills are essential as the candidate is expected to operate in a high-paced and multi-disciplined environment across geographic locations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate extensively and cross-functionally with scientists at the GRC and S&T Biologics in a matrixed research environment

  • Provide scientific leadership in developing creative and innovative functional genomics, cell biology and systems biology approaches to gain scientific understanding in the complex cellular processes of CHO cells in order to improve production of biologics

  • Apply various cell biology and functional genomics techniques including genetic engineering, fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS), high content imaging assays, and ‘omics approaches in CHO cells under various culturing conditions and genetic perturbations

  • Communicate and present project designs and results clearly, both to individual stakeholders and in group settings

  • Write publications, and present results at internal and external scientific meetings and conferences.

Proactively seek out new information in the literature and incorporate this into individual project(s) as well as the overall program.

Qualifications

  • PhD in the field of cell biology, biotechnology and/or bioengineering

  • Strong background in cell biology is a must

  • Experience with mammalian cell culture (CHO), high-content imaging, FACS and genetic engineering (CRISPR/Cas editing, overexpression)

  • A background in CHO cell biology, production of Biologics and protein trafficking is a plus

  • Ability to learn new skills and apply them in a fast-paced environment is a must

  • Creativity, problem solving, and attention to detail are required

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills are essential. Ability to work independently as well as in a team is a must.

  • Publication record demonstrating required expertise as first author in high-impact peer reviewed journals.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify business needs, and to independently build and maintain scientific collaborations with stakeholders.

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
