Job Description

The Structural Biology Group at AbbVie Headquarters in Lake County, Illinois is seeking a highly motivated scientist to join our Structure-Based Drug Discovery team. The ideal candidate should have extensive hands-on experience in modern X-ray Crystallography techniques with demonstrated leadership in drug design, drug discovery and computational methods of molecular structure analysis. Preferably, the ideal candidate should also have industrial experience and exceptional teamwork, communication and leadership skills. The successful candidate will implement innovative strategies to expand internal structural biology capabilities and contribute to drug discovery projects across the therapeutic area portfolio of AbbVie interests.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Determine X-ray crystal structures of protein-ligand complexes in high throughput modes to solve mechanistic questions and identify strategies for improved molecular designs.

  • Experience with scientists in areas of Protein Crystallization and Structure Determination to drive construct design, crystallization and structure determination

  • Provide guidance to crystallization and protein construct design efforts for useful sample preparations

  • Liaison and coordinate with scientists in areas of Molecular Modeling and Medicinal Chemistry to drive drug design and demonstrate leadership in strengthening our alignment with Computational Drug Discovery team

  • Initiate adoption of novel technologies which will facilitate structure-based drug discovery at AbbVie based on critical evaluation of the scientific literature

  • Maintain accurate and timely records of experimental results

  • Communicate results and interpretative analysis to project teams, and present at internal meetings

  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals as appropriate and present at external scientific meetings

  • Qualifications

    • PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or a related field
  • At least 6 years of post-PhD relevant academic or at least 4+ years post-PhD industry experience is required

  • Proven ability in protein crystallization and structure determination and analysis

  • Expertise with structure-based drug design strategies including fragment based approaches

  • Must be detail oriented and meticulous regarding documentation and data management

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary team

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to work on multiple projects in parallel and rapidly adjust to changing priorities

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor team members
