Kitco Fiber Optics Fiber Optic Instructor in Norfolk, Virginia

AtKITCO Fiber Optics, we are a leading provider of fiber optic termination products and consulting services to the military and commercial communications industry. We specialize in the design and fabrication of fiber optic tools, tool kits, and custom cable assemblies. We also produce private label kits for a number of major connector manufacturers and sell our own broad line of products. Our field services division also performs on-site termination, splicing, troubleshooting and testing support, and our training division provides hands-on training and certification programs. We are recognized within the defense industry as fiber optic connectivity experts and, for over 20 years, have customized our products and services to meet strict military standards.

Delivers training programs and materials that support standard operating procedures within the workplace. Works with supervisors and employees to deliver basic new hire training, re-training, cross-training and basic systems training. Monitors compliance to ensure all necessary training is carried out. May specialize in a particular area of training such as call center, distribution center, or manufacturing. Typically has 0-2 years of experience and works under close supervision. Match only non-exempt incumbents to this position.

Basic Function

Instruct, update course material, and maintain proficiency in a wide variety of fiber optic and copper courses and all associated connectors, cabling, tooling, inspection, and test equipment to deliver a performance-based course in a variety of disciplines. Must be able to obtain the NAVSEA Fiber optic certification according to NAVSEA Drawing 8477552.

Responsibilities

Responsible for all the duties associated with being a fiber optic trainer. These responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintain qualification to instruct NAVSEA Certified training in accordance with NAVSEA Drawing 8477552.
  • Qualify to teach a variety of fiber optic courses including commercial and aviation disciplines.
  • Qualify to teach copper courses, if required.
  • Ensure each student has the proper tools and material to perform their assigned tasks.
  • Take ownership of the assigned classroom ensuring all tooling are inventoried/organized before and after each class. Document any discrepancies and order tools when required.
  • Ensure classroom is safe and effective for learning.
  • Make sure the test equipment is operational and in calibration. Ensure all peripheral equipment is in good repair and available to train with.
  • Maintain a valid passport and be available to travel both INCONUS and OCONUS.
  • Assist in developing marketing plans and strategies for the training department.
  • Assist with the analysis, development, and maintenance of training courses in support of existing curricula.
  • Prepare and deliver new training materials as course updates demand to remain current in the latest standards. When not actively teaching, study new material, updates and continue to increase overall knowledge of current and new topics.
  • Prepare and deliver modifications to existing training materials as updates to standards become available.
  • Maintain all ETA exams and testing material. Maintain ETA Test Administrator status.
  • Receive two semi-annual performance evaluations, one lecture and one demonstration. Meet department performance goals on all evaluations.
  • Review all student end-of-course critiques and act on any training deficiencies or student concerns.
  • Ensure all student and class records are scanned and stored in the department data base.
  • Evaluate and discover new training opportunities.
  • Submit weekly time sheets by COB Friday afternoon.
  • Submit all travel expense and trip reports upon completion of travel to the Training Manager for approval.
  • Read and Adhere to the policies documented in the employee handbook.
  • Ensure your appearance a d behavior is always professional.
  • Have a working knowledge of MIL-STD 2042, MIL-STD 2052, NEC, EIA/TIA and ETA standards.
  • Be proactive; When not actively teaching, always be looking for ways to make KITCOs training classes, programs, and facilities better for our students and staff. Cross train in courses taught at KITCO during free weeks to increase value to KITCOs training team.
  • Travel will be required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

Associate of Science Degree, or NEC 9502 with minimum of 2 years teaching experience, or 3 years teaching experience from a certified training company / community college, or an SME with 5 years field experience along with completing the KITCO instructor qualification program preferred.
