The Role

This role will be responsible for the direct management of the Submarine Structural Engineering Department. The Submarine Structures Manager 3 is responsible for the overall technical management, leadership, and performance for structural engineering support of in-service, in- maintenance, and new construction submarine activities at NNS.

The Manager 3 of the Submarine Structural Engineering Department responsibilities include the following:

▪Ensure that all of the employees in the department observe all safety standards and are aware of safety protocols supporting all submarine construction and refit operations.

▪ Manage an indirect budget within approved limits while satisfying training, IT, and labor overhead requirements.

▪Ensure that Submarine Engineering upholds the customer standards and requirements even under cost or schedule pressure.

▪Observe in process work and ensure that quality standards are being met.

▪Drive clear ownership, accountability, continuous improvement, and employee development.

▪Hire/train/assign sufficient diverse engineering resources to support all base and growth work on all contracts.

▪Interface successfully with both internal and external customers including SOSNN and all submarine construction departments.

▪Support the planning and execution efforts of COLUMBIA and VIRGINIA Class new construction (including new fixture design and modifications), SSN688 and VCS submarine availabilities, and all NNS Submarine Planning Yard products.

Additional responsibilities include providing guidance to subordinates based on goals, objectives and Company policy to ensure developed products are technically correct, meet all specification requirements, support cost reduction objectives, meet first time quality goals, and support the downstream customer's needs.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design; Master's Degree and 6 years of relevant experience; PhD and 4 years of relevant experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
