In August 2020, American Express launched a new network in mainland China through our joint venture, Express Company (EC). Amex is the first foreign network to operate in China, and this represents a significant opportunity for us to compete in one of the largest and most advanced payments markets in the world. The Enterprise China Management (ECM) team partners across EC and Amex to build the China business and capitalize on this exciting opportunity for growth.

How will you make an impact in this role?

The Senior Manager of Network & Acquiring will be a key member of the ECM team, focused on driving a vibrant payments network in China. They will partner across EC and Amex functional teams to enhance network capabilities and ensure a fast, convenient, secure, and compliant payments network that powers billions in transaction volume. They will also support the growth of merchant acceptance in China across both traditional POS and QR/digital wallets and support the longer-term network and acquiring strategy for continued growth in the market.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Partner with EC and Amex teams to maintain a robust payments network that adapts to local market needs while maintaining global interoperability

  • Collaborate with network and technology teams to identify, prioritize, plan, and deliver network developments and capabilities to strengthen our network in China and meet evolving global and local market needs

  • Coordinate annual technical planning process; create and execute on network and non-network development roadmap, ensuring delivery against key timelines

  • Lead governance forum to drive transparency and accountability across network initiatives, identify risks and opportunities, and develop strategic recommendations

  • Manage network related technology and operational issues that may arise

  • Support key initiatives to grow merchant acceptance in China via both POS and digital wallets, and ensure American Express is welcomed wherever card members want to spend

  • Drive longer term network and acquiring strategy

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Solid experience in the payments industry with in-depth understanding of payments networks, products, and emerging payment capabilities

  • Strong project and change management aptitude, with demonstrated ability to independently shape and manage complex cross-functional projects across diverse stakeholders

  • Adept at creating structure in ambiguity and driving clear actions and outcomes in large scale initiatives

  • Proactive problem-solver; thinks creatively and strategically while being attentive to detail

  • Eagerness / ability to learn new things quickly and challenge the status quo

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with technical and business teams

  • Strong work ethic, with flexibility to work across multiple time zones

  • Able to travel to China once or twice a year

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience with QR / digital wallets a plus

  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies a plus

  • International business experience (especially in Asia / China) and/or Mandarin language skills a plus

Qualifications

Salary Range: $80,000.00 to $155,000.00 annually bonus benefits
