The anticipated salary range for this role is between $147,000.00 and $191,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

SMBC is seeking a EUC Risk Manager with a strong internal controls and quantitative background to join the Model Risk Governance Team within the Model Risk & Validation Group. The Model Risk Governance Team is responsible for the independent replication and governance activities around end user computing (EUCs) tools utilized in capital planning, financial reporting, and other business processes. This position will be located in the New York, NY office within the NYC metropolitan area and will be part of our remote workforce model utilizing an at-home work arrangement

Role Objectives

  • As part of the second line of defense function, the EUC Risk Manager will support implementation of the EUC Framework across the various SMBC functional areas, which includes leading training sessions to explain the EUC Framework and its components, as well as communicating framework compliance requirements to stakeholders.

  • Independently challenge the work performed by the first line of defense which includes the identification and risk assessment of EUCs.

  • Independently perform EUC functionality testing by assessing the tool's overall suitability to its intended purpose, construct, assumptions, data and calculations, making recommendations for improvements, and thoroughly documenting all work via formal reports.

  • Evaluate other tool controls such as tool identification, change management, access management, and documentation.

  • Evaluation of remediation activity associated with EUC findings.

  • Develop and enhance EUC risk metrics reports and present results to senior management.

  • Continuously broaden and deepen expertise in analytical methods, coding, and tools via self-directed research and training.

  • The EUC Risk Manager may also be involved in supporting Model Risk Management related initiatives, focusing mainly on internal controls enhancement and evaluation

Qualifications and Skills

  • 7 years of relevant experience

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business, or hard science field or related training.

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), organizational, and interpersonal skills.

  • Banking experience in credit, capital markets, asset liability management, financial reporting, regulatory reporting, or operational risk areas. Specific experience within Model Risk Management or EUC Risk Management function is ideal

  • Deep knowledge of internal controls design and controls effectiveness testing concepts

  • Prior experience with control evaluation within model risk, operational risk, compliance risk, financial reporting, regulatory reporting, or internal audit is ideal.

  • Prior experience within a second line of defense function, ideally within Model Risk, EUC, financial reporting, or regulatory reporting quality assurance

  • Familiarity with regulations such as SR 11-7 (Model Risk), Basel, CCAR, BCBS 239, and SOX is ideal

  • Excel proficiency, including experience with macros is good to have.

  • Familiarity with reporting platforms, especially PowerBI.

  • Familiarity with programming languages (e.g. Python, R, VBA, SQL).
