General Description

The City University of New York (CUNY) is the nation's leading urban public university, serving approximately 470,000 students in degree, certificate, and continuing education programs at 24 colleges and institutions in New York City. The Office of Applied Research, Evaluation, and Data Analytics (OAREDA), a unified research and data unit within CUNY’s Office of Academic Affairs, comprised of institutional research and assessment, policy research, program support and evaluation, and data infrastructure, management and analytics.

OAREDA’s Evaluation Unit provides evaluation services to over 30 educational programs administered by CUNY’s Central Office, partners with programs and researchers at CUNY campuses, and collaborates with external organizations in New York City.

Evaluation Unit projects are organized into three main areas of focus: College Readiness, College Access and Success, and Career Readiness and Workforce Development. Working in partnership with program stakeholders and in collaboration with other OAREDA teams, the Evaluation Unit approaches its work with a focus on leveraging data integration, rigorous quantitative and qualitative research methods, and robust reporting solutions to drive program improvement and inform critical decision-making.

Working under the supervision of a senior member of the Evaluation Unit, the Research Analyst I will provide critical support to evaluation projects by collecting, coding, and organizing program data sets. Additionally, the Research Analyst I will help to develop and implement an evaluation agenda for select projects and contribute to evaluation reports. The Research Analyst I will assist with quantitative and qualitative analyses utilizing a variety of data sets and databases to evaluate the programs and produce effective data visualizations.

Other Duties

  • Maintain proficient working knowledge of data sources and processes related to program operational, reporting, and evaluation needs

  • Work closely with OAREDA colleagues to build and maintain project-related data resources.

  • Ensure data quality and completeness.

  • Create and manipulate large, complex datasets from multiple sources.

  • Assist with data collection (quantitative and qualitative), perform data entry, and review program-sourced data, as needed.

  • Perform data analysis (including production of summary statistics) to produce program reports on topics such as: profile of students served, program engagement, and key outcomes of interest.

  • Document procedures and analyses.

  • Respond to ad hoc requests in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Provide assistance with literature reviews that synthesize the state of research and policy in relevant project areas.

  • Ability to travel to other CUNY sites as needed.

  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with formal training in education or the social sciences, with at least two (2) years of full-time experience working in an applied research setting.

  • An advanced degree in a directly related discipline is preferred, and may substitute for up to two (2) years of required experience.

  • Formal training in research and evaluation methods and a strong understanding of statistical concepts.

  • Familiarity with quasi-experimental quantitative methods in program evaluation (such as propensity score matching, linear regression, or logistic regression).

  • Experience using statistical software (R strongly preferred) to perform basic data transformations (e.g., recoding variables, reshaping files) and analysis (e.g., descriptive statistics, simple correlation and regression estimates).

  • Ability to communicate technical project details to audiences with varied levels of data literacy.

  • Familiarity with matching (joining) data sets and accurately maintaining large quantities of data.

  • Detail-oriented, with an ability to keep accurate, well-organized records.

  • Ability to be flexible and to work carefully, quickly, and collaboratively.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

The Research Foundation of The City University of New York (RFCUNY) was established as a not-for-profit educational corporation chartered by the State of New York in 1963.
