The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the Assistant Superintendent-Capital- Maintenance Water & Irrigation Division, but considerable leeway is granted for exercise and judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, other City employees, State and Federal regulatory agencies, vendors, contractors, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a water plant environment and at a variety of City services locations with exposure to hazardous chemicals, airborne pathogens, electrical hazards, construction equipment, below grade hazards, and adverse weather conditions.\ \ WHAT YOU WILL DO:\ ROLE SUCCESS PROFILE\ \ Key Job Accountabilities:\ Performs inspection/maintenance on new and existing fire hydrants. Maintains the integrity of the domestic mainlines by flushing. Services hydrants as needed.\ Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and to keep hydrant mapping data current on the G.I.S. and firehouse programs\ Installs and maintains fire hydrants according to ISPWC, ANSI/AWWA C502, and City of Nampa Section 403 Standards.\ Maintains accurate records and files on all fire hydrants.\ Collects and conducts tests on water samples and equipment in accordance with EPA procedures.\ Operates a variety of complex heavy, light and motorized equipment, including backhoe, excavator, skid steer, vacuum excavator, hydraulic valve exerciser and other related equipment in accordance with licensing and safety standards\ Assumes responsibility for other duties as required or assigned, and attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and\ new developments in assigned work areas.\ Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.\ Responds to citizens\' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.\ Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.\ Is punctual and timely in meeting requirements of performance, including attendance standards and work deadlines.\ Communicates inf rmation and states concerns in a clear and professional manner.\ Respects the opinion of others and demonstrates a reasonable relationship with employees, supervisors and others.\ Accepts and performs in a timely and effective manner changes in work assignments and/or how work is performed.\ \ Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:\ Strong oral and written communication skills\ Thorough knowledge of the mechanics of the different types of fire hydrants within the system.\ Thorough knowledge of GIS mapping and the ability to edit data in the field.\ Thorough knowledge of how to flush the domestic system to achieve maximum efficiency in a safe manner.\ Thorough knowledge of the City\'s Waterworks System, including the SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system which monitors the system by computer.\ Thorough knowledge of Federal, State and City rules and regulations regarding the safe production and delivery of potable and non-potable water to the public.
