Job Title Media Relations Assistant

General Job Description

This is an entry-level position responsible for assisting with various functions in the athletics strategic communications office including statistics, social media, and press releases. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Associate Athletic Director (Strategic Communications).

Essential Job Functions

  1. Operates as part of game day statistical staff for assigned sports and others as needed.

  2. Performs layout and design of assigned game notes and game day programs using desktop publishing software.

  3. Writes and disseminates press releases.

  4. Contributes to updating and maintaining sports social media accounts.

  5. Provides assistance in maintaining and updating departmental website, archival information, records, photos, and statistics.

  6. Assists with day-to-day operations of the athletics strategic communications office for home events.

    Non-Essential Job Functions

  7. Adheres to all applicable National Collegiate Athletic Association ( NCAA ), conference, and university rules and regulations.

  8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge of, or ability to learn, university policies and procedures.

  2. Knowledge of, or ability to learn, policies, procedures, and guidelines established by the conference and the NCAA .

  3. General knowledge of sports and basic rule concepts.

  4. Knowledge of, or ability to learn, applicable strategies for communications in intercollegiate athletics.

  5. Skill in using computer applications including spreadsheet, database, statistical analysis, word processing, desktop publishing, and website content management software.

  6. Skill in completing assignments with attention to detail.

  7. Organizational skills in managing projects simultaneously while maintaining a satisfactory work product.

  8. Ability to understand and follow instructions.

  9. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in both oral and written form.

  10. Ability to set priorities and complete assignments on time.

  11. Ability to work successfully as a member of a team.

  12. Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.

  13. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

    Physical Demands

    Required Education

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or a related field is required.

Required Experience and Training

No direct experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in intercollegiate athletic media relations is preferred. Experience with game day statistics is preferred. Experience with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop is preferred.

Salary Information Hiring Salary - $12.00/hour

This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
