Upward Bound Academic Advisor - Muscle Shoals Project (Grant Funded)

Salary:

Compensation is in accordance with the Alabama Community College System's Salary Schedule E3-4 ($38,979 - $56,128).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide academic advising, financial aid/scholarship guidance, and career counseling to participants.
  • Identify, recruit, screen and recommend participants who meet eligibility requirements in grades 9-12 at target schools.
  • Establish and maintain rapport with school counselors, tutors, and other key personnel at target schools.
  • Conduct program activities to ensure that project objectives are met in accordance to proposed timelines.
  • Assist in the coordination and implementation of the Summer Component and assure participants are appropriately placed in classes/tutoring.
  • Assist in assuring that college financial aid, scholarship, and career information is provided to Upward Bound Participants.
  • Assist with monitoring tutoring programs in target schools and assure participants academic needs are being addressed.
  • Guide participants in the development of an individualized educational plan based on student needs, postsecondary goals, and academic performance. Track academic progress toward completion of high school and program curriculum providing program manager with regular reports regarding student outcomes and status.
  • Monitor all participants academic progress, grades, and test scores.
  • Track participants attendance at all Upward Bound Activities. (Tutoring, Workshops, Summer Component etc.)
  • Follow-up with any participant that misses any Upward Bound Activity.
  • Assist with the identification, employment, training, and supervision of professional Tutors, summer staff, and other project personnel as needed.
  • Maintain a library of postsecondary institutions catalogs, financial aid reports, college admission requirements and career development materials for use by the program.
  • Provide assistance to high school seniors in selecting academic majors, identifying postsecondary schools, completing the FAFSA and applications for admissions, and scholarships. Provide students support as they transition to postsecondary education and follow-up as the student begins their first year of college.
  • Plan and participate in academic year and summer component on- and off-campus workshops, college visits, and day or overnight cultural/educational trips with program staff.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in advising, counseling, education, or related field, required.
  • Minimum one-year experience working with socially, economically, culturally, and/or academically disadvantage youth,required.
  • Trio experience, preferred.
  • Personal or professional experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the target population, preferred.
